Excellent Sci-Fi Mystery Thrillers By Izzy If you're interested in sci-fi, comic books, or Warren Ellis -- and particularly if you're a fan of all three -- then you have reason to celebrate. DC, under its Vertigo imprint, bundled a pair of classic Ellis comics into a deluxe hardcover edition. Ellis spins a compelling set of mysteries in these tales that, despite being over a decade old, are uniquely entertaining.This deluxe hardcover collection features glossy paper stock, cover reproductions for every issue, an Afterward by Ellis explaining his motivations for penning these adventures, as well as a sample of sketches, designs, and prelim art for both stories.The first story, "Ocean," is a 6-issue adventure about a science team deciphering the mysteries of a watery grave on one of Jupiter's moons. It's Ellis' meditation on humanity's penchant for violence.The pacing and story structure belie its screenplay origins. (Yes, Ellis had hoped to make this into a movie.) The protagonist, a UN weapons inspector, is called to address the unearthed mass grave. Why a weapons inspector to check out an alien cemetery? That's just one of the many mysteries that unfurl as the story progresses.Adding to the story's enjoyment is Chris Sprouse's clean, crisp art. It's a perfect match for the requisite clean lines of space ships and sci-fi gear. Sprouse's layouts make it easy to follow the action, and he does an excellent job of creating distinctive features for all the characters so you can easily distinguish them in every panel.This is a solid action yarn in addition to an intriguing mystery. Where the story falls flat is in Ellis' use of standard sci-fi tropes, like the shadowy Big Brother corporation that sucks the life out of its employees (both literally and figuratively). But it's a kick to guess at the answers to Ellis' mysteries, and the pacing is just right. So it's a fun ride.The second tale, "Orbiter," is Ellis' love letter to space exploration. It, too, is a sci-fi mystery thriller that latches onto the reader early with a sense of dread and does not let go. I was desperate to keep reading to find out how all the questions posed at the start of the story would be answered.The story revolves around a long-lost space shuttle returning to Earth covered in skin and piloted by a lone lunatic, the remnant of the original 7-member crew. A group of scientists assemble to discover what happened.Ellis unveils the answers that await only to those brave enough to dive into the mind-bending phenomenon that is space. From Einstein's theory of relativity to the nature of gravity and why it's critical for humanity to continue to push toward the stars, "Orbiter" soars with a gripping scientific mystery and Colleen Doran's distinctive art.Where will this journey of a thousand questions take us? Only our wildest imaginations can guess. And that's what makes these stories so compelling, such a delight to read and experience. Ellis challenges us to take risks to embrace our potential, and rewards us for asking the questions that drive us to evolve beyond the daily struggle to survive. And speaking of risks, I took one in buying this book, and I'm glad I did.

A wonderful read in a beautiful edition By sihz I'm a big fan of the Oversize Hardcover format and make it a point to try and collect the deluxe editions Vertigo have been putting out of their popular long-running titles (100 Bullets, Y The Last Man, Fables, etc.) But the deluxe editions of these mini-series are a real treat. For some reason they don't seem to be on the radars of a lot of comic fans, but they collect some of the best work in comics from the previous couple of decades. Previous examples I've loved were Grant Morrison's We3, Brian K. Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad, Neil Gaima's Books of Magic, Spaceman by Brian Azzarello and Daytripper by Gabriel Ba, etc. Here we have two excellent science fiction stories by Warren Ellis collected in one beautiful edition. Both are essentially sf mysteries with an emphasis on the science fiction. The art in both is beautiful as well and I can't recommend this enough. I really hope Vertigo keeps putting out more of their great minis in this deluxe format. Off the top of my head I can think of Brubaker's 'Deadenders', Jeff Lemire's 'Trillium', Dan Abnett's 'New Deadwardians' and Kevin Baker's 'Luna Park' all deserving the deluxe treatment.
