It includes backward planning for the long term. I have seen backwards planning used for short term goals but this emphasis on backward planning may be unique to the genre. The book is short and simple to read.

David McBain can do the impossible with one hand tied behind his back, but miracles take him a wee bit longer... Two deployments in Afghanistan couldn't prepare Major David McBain and Captain Kenzie Wallis-Manning for the week leading up to D-Day - June 6, 1944. From the bombed-out streets of London to the huts at Bletchley Park and an interview with Alan Turing to the 2nd Battalion Army Rangers and the beaches of Normandy, this high-stakes, time-travel World War II romantic adventure will keep you enthralled, awake into the wee hours, and racing toward the end, only to wish it had never arrived.West Point graduate Kenzie Wallis-Manning planned to make the Army her career, but after being severely wounded during her second deployment, and suffering from PTSD, she retires from the military and enrolls in law school. As soon as she sounds out the words engraved on the stone, she is whisked back in time to May 28, 1944. When Elliott Fraser learns his friend's half-sister, Kenzie, has disappeared, he sends David McBain and Jack Mallory to the past to find her, and bring her and her soul mate back to the future. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. No spoiler review. Another great saga episode. By NancyQ-C I received this book pre-publication, with no compensation, for an honest review..and I've read it 3 times. I tried to keep out spoilers. I liked this as much as I did Sapphire because of the history and active storyline.Kenzie Wallis-Manning (U.S. Army-Intelligence retired) returns to her London flat, where she is doing her thesis on Winston Churchill, to be greeted by the postman with a package for her and a call/lecture from her alcoholic father, who continues to live in the regimented world of an Army officer and expects her to do the same. All she wants from him his love or, at the very least, acknowledgment of pride in her accomplishments. She leads a solitary life with only PTSD as her companion. Eventually she opens the box to find an emerald brooch. A touch of the clasp and it opens to reveal a Gaelic incantation which, like her predecessors takes her into the fog and leaves her in war torn London a fortnight before D-day. With her military training she gets along with the help of Molly whom she met while looking for some light and information (like what is the date). In Scotland, her brother is fed up with the police and calls friend and mystery novelist David McBain for help. He and fellow time traveler (The Sapphire Brooch) JacK Mallory soon learn of the existence of yet another jeweled brooch and they research and use one of the other brooch's to go to WW-I London. The crafting of how this came about is genius. Meanwhile, Kenzie uses her intelligence expertise to go work at the top secret Bletchley Park, home of Turling's code breaking center. The personal relationships of the well developed characters contains some internal demons that are dealt with through love from friends and relations, especially Kenzie who uses her internal strength and pain to overcome being in a different kind of battle, and how coming to love will assure her independence. Like Sapphire, this is full of action and some steamy romance (no explicit sex).In this flawlessly crafted novel, I was immersed in the story. She achieves a high level of sophistication that does not insult the reader. She has created endearing characters (that we now know well) and physical descriptions with intelligent literary language.

David, Kenzie and Cav's Story By Shirl This is the 4th book in this series:David, Kenzie and Cav's story. The time is set in WWII , week of D-Day and the present. The story is about people we know and new ones we meet.Kenzie's adventure draws you in right from the start. The experiences and her destiny take you on a very fun, sad, scary, and romantic ride.David, is trying to save another woman in trouble. Will he loose his heart again and fall in love with someone else's soulmate? Will he be to late to save her, will he be able to let her go?Cav, a fighter pilot in the war, and Kenzie hit it off at once. Is he the man that she wants forever. Is Cav why the Emerald Brooch sent her back to this time? The story is a page turner and moves along quickly. You feel like you are living the events in real life. This was an exciting new Brooch book that sticks with you long after you end it.The writer has done her research well on this story and brings you interesting details that make the story so real.I was asked to read this exciting book and I am giving an honest review.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I read it in two days and I must say I was NOT disappointed. Old "friends" from previous books By Lynn W. As a fan of Katherine Lowry Logan's other books, I was anxiously awaiting the release of The Emerald Brooch. I read it in two days and I must say I was NOT disappointed. Old "friends" from previous books, such as Elliott and Meredith Fraser, Jack Mallory, and David McBain return in this book, along with new characters, including fiesty, fearless, former Army officer Kenzie Wallis-Manning. I love romance novels such as this one, that involve time-travel--in this case to London in 1944 ,on the eve of the Allied Invasion of Europe, otherwise known as D-Day. There is also a good deal of history and humor, action and excitement, good guys vs. bad guys woven into the story. There are also a few steamy love scenes thrown in as well. Ms Logan strives for historical accuracy and "does her homework" as far as researching her subject matter. Her characters become people that you care about, knowing that you will likely meet them again in another of her books. I didn't want this one to end and I cannot wait for her next novel, The Diamond Brooch, to appear late next year. Thank you, Katherine, for another wonderful adventure!

Shortly after arriving in the White House in early 1933, Franklin Roosevelt took the United States off the gold standard. His opponents thought his decision unwise at best, and ruinous at worst. But they could not have been more wrong. With The Money Makers, Eric Rauchway tells the absorbing story of how FDR and his advisors pulled the levers of monetary policy to save the domestic economy and propel the United States to unprecedented prosperity and superpower status. Drawing on the ideas of the brilliant British economist John Maynard Keynes, among others, Roosevelt created the conditions for recovery from the Great Depression, deploying economic policy to fight the biggest threat then facing the nation: deflation.Throughout the 1930s, he also had one eye on the increasingly dire situation in Europe. In order to defeat Hitler, Roosevelt turned again to monetary policy, sending dollars abroad to prop up the faltering economies of Britain and, beginning in 1941, the Soviet Union. FDR’s fight against economic depression and his fight against fascism were indistinguishable. As Rauchway writes, “Roosevelt wanted to ensure more than business recovery; he wanted to restore American economic and moral strength so the US could defend civilization itself.” The economic and military alliance he created proved unbeatable—and also provided the foundation for decades of postwar prosperity. Indeed, Rauchway argues that Roosevelt’s greatest legacy was his monetary policy. Even today, the “Roosevelt dollar” remains both the symbol and the catalyst of America’s vast economic power. The Money Makers restores the Roosevelt dollar to its central place in our understanding of FDR, the New Deal, and the economic history of twentieth-century America. We forget this history at our own peril. In revealing the roots of our postwar prosperity, Rauchway shows how we can recapture the abundance of that period in our own.

The Money Makers: How Roosevelt and Keynes Ended the Depression, Defeated Fascism, and Secured a Prosperous Peace, by Eric Rauchway

Review New York Times Book Review“Rauchway tells this important story with passion, intelligence and style...The Money Makers is economic and diplomatic history of the first order. It tells a crucially important story about a central development in the world of economy, the emergence of the modern monetary system. And it tells this story with sensitivity to the economic, diplomatic and political environment. Anyone with even a passing interest in international economic affairs will benefit from reading this intelligent, timely and thoroughly accessible book. And perhaps today’s policy makers—especially contemporary advocates of orthodox austerity sitting in Berlin—can learn something from the story Eric Rauchway tells so well.”Wall Street Journal“A close-to-the-ground account of the political and intellectual forces that drove the decision. Mr. Rauchway’s prose is lucid and unpretentious, and his explanations of technical monetary issues are smoothly integrated with the flow of the story.”Economist“An excellent primer on Franklin Roosevelt’s economics.... Impressive. Mr Rauchway combines three things that you seldom see in economic-history books: sufficient attention to complexity; a solid grasp of the economics; and writing that is enjoyable to read. Barely a page goes by without some lovely detail.... As an introduction to the economic debates taking place in London and Washington in the 1930s and 1940s, Mr Rauchway’s work could not be bettered.”Library Journal“Rauchway succinctly places [Bretton Woods] within its political and economic context.... A useful, readable companion to Ed Conway’s The Summit.”Publishers Weekly“Rauchway’s thoughtful, well-researched narrative history is a valuable contribution to economic history, with ample lessons for the current era.”Kirkus“A compelling examination of a still-vilified monetary policy that has continued to show results in spite of conservative criticism.”Douglas Irwin, Professor of Economics, Dartmouth College“If you think the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing after the Great Recession of 2009 was unusual and controversial, wait until you hear about what Franklin Roosevelt did in the 1930s. Eric Rauchway has given us a lucid and penetrating account of the monetary policies of the New Deal and how it helped to bring about economic recovery from the Great Depression.”Brad DeLong, Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley“Eric Rauchway’s The Money Makers is one of the very best books to read to understand our economy today. It tells the story of how Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the people who worked for him pragmatically—experimenting with institutional redesign, reinforcing success, dropping failure, focusing on what worked—refuted via action the ideologues of the left and the right who to this day condemn his New Deal as ineffective or destructive.”Barry Eichengreen, Professor of Economics and Political Science, University of California, Berkeley“Monetary policy got the United States into the Great Depression, but monetary policy also got it out. Eric Rauchway brings that tale alive by describing the adventures of two most unlikely monetary escape artists: Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John Maynard Keynes. The 1930s will never look the same.”Kevin M. Kruse, author of One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America“In this persuasive work, Eric Rauchway not only proves that monetary policy should be central to our understanding of the Roosevelt administration in depression and war, but also shows how that story should be told. With an engaging narrative and sharp argument, The Money Makers stands as a compelling read.”

About the Author Eric Rauchway is a historian at the University of California, Davis, and the author of numerous books on the Progressive and New Deal eras. He has written for the American Prospect, the Financial Times, and other publications, and lives in Davis, California.

By ari Take a moment to note that the people who are giving this book negative reviews are doing so either because it undermines their political hobbyhorses or because they haven't read it. The truth is, the Money Makers is both terrific scholarship and also great literature. It's beautifully written, featuring vivid storying telling, well-drawn characters, and dramatic tension. It's deeply researched, as the author visited scores of archives and mined sources that previous historians either ignored or didn't realize existed. And, despite what one extraordinarily unfair review suggests above (again, please take note of the political axes being ground in these reviews), it's powerfully argued, demonstrating that FDR, with an important assist from J.M. Keynes, conceptualized the monetary policy codified at Bretton Woods as a way of stabilizing the international economy and thus keeping the world safe from fascism. This is a very important book. That it also happens to be a genuinely well-told told is a bonus. Kudos to the author. And shame on reviewers who don't acknowledge their biases before weighing in on such important work.

27 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining stories, staggeringly unsupported conclusions By Aaron C. Brown The Money Makers is a well-written, entertaining history of economic and war policies of Franklin Roosevelt's administration. The author combines telling detail with broad context, keeping things simple enough for a coherent story, but complex enough to capture important interactions. It is basic enough to be read without previous knowledge, but even most people familiar with the period will learn a lot of important new detail. However the author aspires to do more than tell the story, he wants to argue that Keynes was right and Roosevelt was wise and effective, and that we should accept Keynes' ideas today, and apply Roosevelt's methods. This is incredibly ambitious. There is enormous disagreement about the causes of the Great Depression and WWII, about Keynes' influence on ideas and policies, about Roosevelt was trying to do and how those attempts influenced events compared to what another President might have done and about how US policies affected events. And even if all those things were settled, there would be disputes about how to apply those lessons today. This book tackles the enormous task of defending its thesis by ignoring it. Issues are discussed only in terms of how they were understood at the time. There is no account of retrospective analysis, or insight from comparisons with other places and times, or advances in theoretical understanding. No competing perspectives are addressed in any serious way. As best I can tell, the author's argument is that he can imagine worse states of the world in 1945 than actually occurred, so we should emulate Keynes and Roosevelt today.Based on the author's previous work, my guess is he is a good historian and writer, who wanted to do a serious popular history of New Deal economic and foreign policy. He accomplished that, but made an unfortunate decision to jazz it up with a sound bite of a thesis too crude and overconfident for even a grade school history text, in an attempt to stir up some politicized reviews from people with no interest in history.By all means read this book for an education in the Roosevelt administration, it's a four or five star history. But if your interest is in the subtitle, you don't need to buy the book, because nothing in it adds support or nuance to the bald statement following "how".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A valuable historical chronicle of the Great Depression By J. Davis I enjoyed reading The Money Makers. Rauchway, a historian, gives a comprehensive look at the long war by FDR against economic depression at home and fascism abroad. John Maynard Keynes is the underling hero--Robin to his Batman if you will.Having praised it, I would make a slight disclaimer. TMM is an interpretation of the events of these times and Rauchway is staunchly pro-New Deal and anti-gold standard. I mostly agree with his view, but there are a few details I would quibble with. I would argue that the New Deal, while it improved the economy , was not as successful as Rauchway portrays it. That's a judgment call that each reader can and should evaluate for himself.

The subject of the present volume, namely the differently formed flowers normally produced by certain kinds of plants, either on the same stock or on distinct stocks, ought to have been treated by a professed botanist, to which distinction I can lay no claim. As far as the sexual relations of flowers are concerned, Linnaeus long ago divided them into hermaphrodite, monoecious, dioecious, and polygamous species. This fundamental distinction, with the aid of several subdivisions in each of the four classes, will serve my purpose; but the classification is artificial, and the groups often pass into one another.

--- Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Much information but no TOC. By John P. This was Darwin's work on the forms of plants and flowers he identified around the globe. It seems to be the entire work as I remember from University, but I found the lack of Table of Contents to make this a hard read.I like to jump around from similar flower and plant species to other species that I assume were similar in form and function. This book seemed to lack an easy way for me to do that. Other readers might find this not a problem, but it held me back slightly.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Informative book. Very scientific in language, though By Marissa Charles Darwin's book about different plants on the same species will engage any horticulturist botanist, or plant-lover alike. Definitely a must read if you are well-read when it comes to plants. The book wasn't accessible for me, as a reader, just because of all the scientific plant names/jargon.

Our classroom is decorated with a Superman theme, so it was perfect for that . I also used it to discuss the meaning of origin. It's a cute book with good illustrations and a list of vocabulary words which were hi-lighted in blue.My students and I all enjoyed it.

It's very appropriate for that age. My biggest gripe is that it's only available in paperback and not hardcover. With the beating this book has taken in the past six months, I have doubts it will still be around in a year or two when he is finally able to read it to himself.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the memes were small on my tablet screen and the fonts were sometimes hard to read. I wish that when enlarging the print the meme would have gotten bigger too. But nope.

Ashton-Kirk, Criminologist, by John Thomas McIntyre

About the Author John Thomas McIntyre was an American novelist who wrote both mainstream and mystery novels . His success as a serious novelist was limited, and to make a living he wrote juvenile fiction, short stories, and mysteries, including a series of four stories featuring Ashton-Kirk, a scientific-minded criminologist. In the words of his publisher, The Penn Publishing Company, “These remarkably interesting detective stories center around a wealthy young man who has made the study of crimes his hobby and occupation. It leads him into some queer complications and often into great dangers.”

Best PDF Ebook Gangland Chicago: Criminality and Lawlessness in the Windy City, by Richard C. Lindberg

This engrossing tale of gangs and organized criminality begins in the frontier saloons situated in the marshy flats of Chicago, the future world class city of Mid-continent. Gangland Chicago recounts the era of parlor gambling, commercialized vice districts continuing through the bloody Prohibition bootlegging wars; failed reform movements; the rise of post-World War II juvenile criminal gangs and the saga of the Blackstone Rangers in a chaotic, racially divided city. , Gang violence and street crime is endemic in contemporary Chicago. There is much more to the saga of crime, politics, and armed violence than Al Capone and John Dillinger. Gangland Chicago explores the changing patterns of criminal behavior, politics, gangs, youth crime and the failures of reform in its historic totality. Richard Lindberg takes the reader on a journey through decades of a troubled past to delve deep into the evolution of street gangs and organized violence endemic in Chicago. Small ethnic gangs organized in ethnic slum districts of the city expanded into the well-known organized crime syndicates of Chicago’s history. Gangland Chicago is full of stories of unchecked violence, lawlessness, and mayhem. Unlike other standard true crime accounts focused exclusively on the Prohibition era, this historical look-back probes the obscure and forgotten dark corners of city crime history. Lindberg details how both “organized” and “dis-organized” street gangs have paralyzed city neighborhoods and transformed the crimes of the Windy City from street thuggery and common ruffians protected and nurtured by politicians into a protected class is gripping. Gangland Chicago is a revealing look at the Chicago underworld of yesterday and today. This comprehensive volume is sure to entertain and inform any reader interested in the evolution of organized crime and gangs in America’s most representative city of the American Heartland.

Gangland Chicago: Criminality and Lawlessness in the Windy City, by Richard C. Lindberg

Review This expansive chronicle of criminal violence in Chicago traces the roots of today’s gang violence back to the late 19th century, when parlor gambling and brothels laid a foundation of lawlessness among transients, railroaders, and military men that eventually attracted renowned gangsters like Al Capone to the Windy City. Just as critical to the evolution of gangland Chicago, Lindberg asserts, were the lesser-known but equally dangerous Chinese 'tong' gangs, the race riots of 1919, and the trafficking of young women. By the second half of the 20th century, the number of children growing up with single parents began contributing significantly to Chicago’s gang culture. Lindberg ends this colorful narrative in 1989, leaving open the potential for a sequel covering the 1990s and early decades of the 21st century. A lifelong Chicagoan and city historian, he revels in uncovering Chicago’s underground. (Publishers Weekly)Lindberg reminds us you can’t understand Chicago without understanding its gangs. A fascinating, detailed, and indispensable history. (John M. Hagedorn, Professor and Senior Research Fellow, University of Illinois; author of People & Folks, Gangs, Crime, and the Underclass in a Rustbelt City)A rich, kaleidoscopic journey through the organized and disorganized criminal history of the city that put crime on the map. Lindberg lays his formidable talents on the line to tell this blood-sodden epic, which is both riveting and heartbreaking. Gangland Chicago should take its rightful place at the top of all American History syllabi and reading lists. (Jay Bonansinga, New York Times bestselling author of The Sinking of the Eastland, Lucid, and The Walking Dead: Invasion)Crime in the city of Chicago has long held the attention of both scholars and the reading public. While a number of books have traced the history of the Capone Syndicate and its transformation into the Chicago Outfit, there is relatively little written about Chicago’s many other criminal gangs. Lindberg’s book fills this void. As a writer, I have always been impressed by the author’s ability to study difficult to research topics. His skillful integration of newspaper reports and published sources has brought Lindberg’s work to the attention of both the academic and nonacademic reader alike. The author’s last book, The Gambler King of Clark Street: Michael C. McDonald and the Rise of Chicago’s Democratic Machine is a noteworthy example. Those who study history know that you cannot comprehend today’s social problems without understanding what came before. Gangland Chicago: Criminality and Lawlessness in the Windy City is a must read for anyone interested in understanding crime in Chicago. (Robert M. Lombardo, PhD, author of Organized Crime in Chicago: Beyond the Mafia and The Black Hand: Terror by Letter in Chicago)Richard Lindberg is the reigning authority on Chicago bad guys. It didn't start with Capone, and Lindberg's got the goods on them all, from Roger Plant to the El Rukns. (Sam Reaves, co-author of Mob Cop: My Life of Crime in the Chicago Police Department)Early on, Richard Lindberg quotes Lincoln Seffens' observation that Chicago is “First in violence, deepest in dirt, lawless, unlovely, ill-smelling, irreverent...the ‘tough’ among cities, a spectacle for the nation,” to which he adds, “It is that today.” Lindberg provides what must be the most comprehensive overview of Windy City street gangs ever undertaken. With a historian's trained eye, he examines social conditions, the impact of economic, ethnic and racial segregation, the scourge of poverty, despair and failed reform movements dating back to the Civil War period and continuing into the New Millennium – all contributing factors to the rise of criminal street gangs in the South, West and North Sides of the city, and how some of these gangs morphed into organized crime factions known colloquially as the "Outfit," and the "gangster nations" of the modern day. He also brings to life the smorgasbord of rascals whose politics and policies still managed to yield a magnificent skyline and a citizenry who love the place, and he does so with a style of writing that resists a reader's efforts to even lay it down. (William J. Helmer, author of The Complete Public Enemy Almanac)Everyone loves Chicago history, especially Chicago history involving crime and gangsters. This wonderful book will be snapped up by enthusiasts and recruit others. Enjoy! (Leigh Bienen, senior lecturer, Northwestern University School of Law; author Florence Kelley, Factory Inspector in 1890s Chicago, and The Children)

About the Author Richard Lindberg is a lifelong Chicagoan, author, journalist, and research historian. He has written 17 critically acclaimed books dealing with aspects of crime, politics, sports, and history in the Windy City, including Shattered Sense of Innocence: The Chicago Child Murders of 1955, Return to the Scene of the Crime: A Guide to Infamous Places in Chicago, and The Gambler King of Clark Street: Michael C. McDonald and the Rise of Chicago’s Democratic Machine, winner of the 2009 Best Biography Award presented by the Society of Midland Authors and Whiskey Breakfast: My Swedish Family My American Life, named the best non-fiction book of 2011 by The Chicago Writer’s Association. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gangland Chicago is a Rand-McNally criminal roadmap of Chicago and the surrounding area. By Biart Williams 1. Richard Lindberg's Gangland Chicago is a well-documented tome of Chicago crime covering the ruffian, outlaw gangs of the post-Civil War period to organized crime in the Roaring Twenties to today's drug dealers. The book also reflects on the aches and pains of a city rising from a small frontier outpost to a thriving metropolis, stamped with Chicago's unique brand of big boss politics.2. The book, is a Rand-Mcnally criminal roadmap of Chicago and the surrounding area. Chicago readers, especially, can push themselves away from the couch and go on a vicarious pursuit to the actual crime spot. Map in hand, readers can explore the sites where hoodlums were "whacked' and Chicago history was made: Chicago Fire (137 DeKoven), the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre (2122 North Clark), Al Capone's Chicago home (7244 Prarie).Unfortunately for thrill seekers, Chicago and the surrounding suburbs won't honor these Gangland Chicago sites with plaques or markers. Something about the city's image when in fact there is nothing to be ashamed of. The legends and stories are already part of the city's lore and, with a bit of irony, should be relished by all Chicagoans.3. The social problems facing the early reformers is a subject thoroughly explored by Lindberg. Well-meaning social workers were overwhelmed by the rough and tumble elements with their underlying death wish and fatalistic attitude. It would take more data and years of research to make inroads in rehabilitating criminals, particularly juvenile offenders.4. Reading between the lines of Gangland Chicago I got the sense that nobody did it better than the Irish. Irish mobsters became an integral part of the body politick with the formation of the so-called social clubs which elevated their leaders to positions of influence and high office. In return for getting out the vote, ethnic gang members gained some immunity when conducting their own shady affairs.5. Lindberg leaves the reader with a staggering thought: an estimated 125,000 gang members currently roam the Chicago area. Our political and social institutions will be challenged to confront this disturbing menace. Do we tackle this problem with all available resources, particularly education and equal opportunity legislation, or, deriding social engineering, simply learn to accept it. As saloonkeeper and alderman Paddy Bauler once remarked, "Chicago ain't ready for reform!"Additional. Wordsmith Richard Lindberg keeps the reader moving forward with his well-structured sentences, extending each sentence with choice words to firmly encase the thought on the mind of the reader. Those wanting to be a reader should study Mr. Lindberg's prose.

The plot progresses in a manner that suggests more interesting developments will continue to occur in the next volume, although it is an admittedly slow journey. With the manga being converted into an anime, this is a good time to read the source material. I purchased the Kindle version and had no issues with the digital copy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Yuri-chan 7 By Mike Keepper The Nagato Yuki-chan series is a delightful light romantic story. This series is an alternate universe to the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series in which Nagato Yuki is a real Hunan being. It does not have the SciFi elements of the Haruhi series. Kyon and Yuki develop their romantic relationship is a very slow and painful yet humorous matter. This series does not have the Manic Energy of the Haruhi series, but still very enjoyable!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Just like with the Haruhi series By Seth Venable As usual, Tanigawa's works are a masterpiece. Just like with the Haruhi series, he has brought to life a group of fictional characters in a way that sticks in your memory. Even in a completely different world, Haruhi and Co. remain as loveable as always. Excellent writing and phenomenal art will leave you grinning as you watch the casts' cutesy antics unfold. Be sure to check out the anime too!

I'd read and enjoyed the entire "Blackstone Chronicles" many years ago By Cam Robb I'd read and enjoyed the entire "Blackstone Chronicles" many years ago. Brought this thinking it would be a pre-qual or follow up to the original material. Disappointed. Perhaps I will re-read the original and try this again.

Walking, by Henry David Thoreau

From the Back Cover A meandering ode to the simple act and accomplished art of taking a walk. Profound and humorous, companionable and curmudgeonly. Walking, by America's first nature writer, is your personal and portable guide to the activity that, like no other, awakens the senses and soul to the 'absolute freedom and wildness' of nature.

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

He writes about his love of nature and tries to show others how to enjoy it. This book brings out the beauty of all the surroundings that many people pass by every day. It also encouraged me to get out and live up my ocasional stroll around the neighborhood. I took this book to school and it even helped relieve me a little stress. I recommend this book to all nature lovers.

64 of 72 people found the following review helpful. In defense of wilderness By Gary Sprandel More than any book, this argues for experiencing nature and preserving wilderness. Thoreau himself saw that fewer passenger pigeons were visiting and even then was aware of threats. Though first spoken in lectures on 1851, and 1856-1857, and published in June 1862 Atlantic Monthly, a month after his death, it still speak to us in the 21st century. For example ".. what would become of us, if we walked only in a garden or a mall?", . "In wilderness is the preservation of the world." , "To preserve wild animals implies generally the creation of a forest for them to dwell in or resort to. So it is with man". So lace up your shoes, grab your binoculars, and go for a walk and join the tribe of squirrels!

66 of 76 people found the following review helpful. It helped to open my eyes to the world around me! By A Customer It is a perfect little book to carry with you for inspiration. It makes me want to take a walk... and the beautiful thing about this book is that it allows me to take a walk in my mind without ever leaving my office or room. I have and will continue to read it over and over.

A Life in Red: A Story of Forbidden Love, the Great Depression, and the Communist Fight For a Black Nation in the Deep South, by David Beasley

Review A series of fascinating footnotes to the story of American communism, civil rights, and Richard Wright. Former Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter and editor Beasley (Without Mercy: The Stunning True Story of Race, Crime, and Corruption in the Deep South, 2014, etc.) explains that the genesis for the recounting of the interracial marriage between Herbert and Jane Newton came from an inquiry from a French scholar concerning work he was doing on Wright and the writing of Native Son, during a time when Wright was living with the Newtons. Jane was initially reluctant to revisit that period, so long after she had divorced Herbert and had become the city clerk in Santa Barbara, a conservative California enclave where the Red Scare still lingered. But once she started corresponding on her days as a communist, she found it hard to stop. She was the daughter of a well-to-do Michigan family, with a father who became head of the American Legion. She became radicalized during the Great Depression, and her relationship with and marriage to Newton, whose communist activities were perceived as a threat, were considered such a moral aberration that the only way she avoided jail was with a short commitment to a psychiatric hospital, because "a daughter of such a prominent white family would have to be insane to turn her back on such an upbringing and marry a black Communist." The book's perspective finds the communist plan of promoting violent revolution in the American South to be misguided at best, but Beasley celebrates Jane as an unsung hero. "On Communism, Jane had been on the wrong side of history," he writes. "But on race in America, she was decades ahead of her time." Though by no means a thorough history, the narrative also touches on schisms in the Communist Party, differences in goals within the civil rights movement, and the unhappy success of Wright, who spent his last years in Paris, estranged from his homeland. A concise book that shines a light on some largely forgotten history. --Kirkus ReviewsA thrilling tale of an interracial marriage between two Communists, A Life in Red is a love story and a political saga. Crisply written, it reads like a novel, and transports the reader into a lost world when deeply committed people worked for racial justice in the decades before the civil-rights movement of the 1950s. Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore, Peter V. and C. Vann Woodward Professor of History, Yale University In a clear journalistic account, David Beasley tells a neglected love story so as to reveal provocative, lost subtexts in American history. The deeper implications of this book are transcendent. A Life in Red is a valuable, original resource. R. Baxter Miller, author of On the Ruins of Modernity: New Chicago Renaissance from Wright to Fair David Beasley s story of the black political figure Herbert Newton illuminates an obscure chapter in the struggle for racial justice in the United States. Newton courted the death penalty in 1930s Georgia on two counts: he married the daughter of a white American Legion commander, and he tried to win Southern blacks over to Communism. Beasley tells this compelling story with great sensitivity. Woodford McClellan, professor emeritus, University of Virginia David Beasley has written a wonderfully engaging account of a little-known chapter of American history. The personalities come to life here, in all their glory and with all their frailties. More than the story of people and their relationships, however, A Life in Red manages to put the events that followed the McCarthy era, the civil-rights movement in their historical context. It is not difficult to see that, even today, we live in the shadows of Herbert and Jane Newton. --Peter Lindsay, associate professor of political science and philosophy, Georgia State University
