I read and enjoyed this very insightful book By Thami I read and enjoyed this very insightful book, Zak Ettamymy has done it again he again wrote about a subject that many people think knew a lot about but he surprised me with many new facts about the universe. I share his opinion that we still don’t know many things about our place in the universe. He puts the universe, its birth, its development and even its purpose right in between your hands with this book…a must read.

I'm not a manga/manhwa fanatic but this book grabbed onto me in the first volume and literally dragged me into its complex story of murder, betrayal, and revenge. Yaki, the daughter of the murdered Shaman Warrior Yarong, has now grown up and developed her own fierce fighting skills after years of training in the assassin camps. She's finally been reunited with Batu, the gigantic warrior who was her protector as an infant, and servant to her father. The time has come for them and their allies to take the war to the rulers of Kugai who have hunted down and murdered all of the Shaman Warriors and re-written the history books to paint those noble warriors as sadistic killers. They are joined in their crusade by the young Shaman Warrior, Horakaan, who watched as Kugai warriors killed his own family years earlier. They have joined with the Manutu clan to battle Kugai on its own lands. But their plan may be ruined from the beginning as a spy within their midst betrays them to the Kugai rulers.A middle backstory in this issue deals with the relationship between Batu and his master, Yarong. Park Joong-Ki takes us back to the moment the pair first met. Batu was a Butcher, a low-life wrestler and aspiring to become a Kugai warrior. When his deal to train with a warrior goes wrong, he is rescued by Yarong and thus did he pledge himself to Yarong's service. Now, many years later, he comes face-to-face--finally--with the Death Lord Yuda, the man who killed his master.Wow! There is lots going on in this volume between the plot against Kugai and the backstory on Batu and Yarong but it all works. One of Kugai's Shaman hunters finally gets his just due and I almost jumped out of my seat and applauded. It's also great to see an (almost) adult Yaki finally show what she is made of and put her years of training to use. I don't have enough superlatives to say about Shaman Warrior!

It is an excellent read. This beautifully illustrated action series has great artwork of people and backgrounds are very nice to look at and detailed. The storyline is great! It's about the warriors and the clans fighting for the ownership and leadership of their own land. There is alot of fighting going on.If you like samurai stories such as Blade of the Immortal, Vagabond or Lone Wolf and Cub, you should like this series. This series isn't as long as those series I mentioned above which is nice for a change.

"Riveting..."  Kirkus ReviewsLAWYER GAMES is the TRUE story of the murder case that gave rise to the book and Clint Eastwood directed motion picture, Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil. But this book goes far beyond the boundaries of a single murder case. No reader of LAWYER GAMES will ever again look the same way at a criminal trial. In the early morning of May 2, 1981, Danny Hansford was shot dead by James Williams with a World War II vintage Luger in a historic Savannah mansion. For the next eight-and-a-half years, through four murder trials and intrigue which reached the highest levels of Georgia politics-including a former governor and the Georgia Supreme Court-lawyers battled over whether the 50-year-old Williams shot the 21-year-old Hansford in self-defense.Written by Dep Kirkland, who arrived at the scene when Hansford's body was still on the floor, Lawyer Games is the true story of this remarkable case. Kirkland, the Chief Assistant DA at the time, made the decision to arrest Williams and tried the first of four murder trials alongside the district attorney. His firsthand knowledge allows him not only to deeply analyze the murder case but also to expose the legal mischief spawned when a defendant facing unshakable physical evidence possesses almost unlimited funds.LAWYER GAMES is not merely the story of an infamous murder case. It is the story of lawyer obfuscation, subterfuge and manipulation of the criminal trial process. These are common tools of a certain species of defense lawyer. LAWYER GAMES demonstrates the connection by drawing parallels with other high-profile criminal defendants, including O.J. Simpson, Phil Spector, Angelo Bruno (one of two Hillside Stranglers) and others.True crime aficionados will be drawn to the two stories told in the book: The riveting story of the case, its evidence (including facts never heard in the courtroom), trials and results, and the incredible eight-year campaign to beat a murder rap no matter what, with a look behind the curtain at a darker side of the American criminal justice system.

Lawyer Games: After Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by Dep Kirkland

Review "A meticulous, intuitive, and riveting nonfiction work . . . Kirkland uses firsthand experience and trial records to tell the story of a Savannah, Georgia, shooting death that spawned a best-selling book and movie . . ." -Kirkus Reviews"This nonfiction book often resembles a torrid TV drama." -Kirkus Reviews

From the Author As the craze over the "Midnight" book and film swept Savannah up in its wake over the years, continuing to the present day, I had been told again, again, and again, "You have to write that book," meaning the truth about the murder, the case, and the aftermath. But I had moved on and was very busy with other things, so I didn't take up that challenge, until it came up once again, all the way out in Hollywood and all these years after the fact. So, I finally dove into the morass, to wrestle with the octopus known as the "Williams" case. The octopus reference is probably one reason I resisted for so long--my knowledge of the events surrounding the case, which went far deeper than the public understood, and far deeper than a certain book even attempted to explain--and my own maniacal attention to detail. I was right on both counts, considering the task took well over two years. But I'm thankful for having completed this unfinished business, for the sake of the truth, for the sake of the hard work of all those involved over all those years, and for the sake of the oft-forgotten victim, Danny Hansford. People who are not model citizens are citizens nonetheless, and he deserved better. Hopefully this book will help.

About the Author Dep Kirkland is a writer, actor, and director currently living in California. A Savannah native, Dep entered the legal field after UGA Law School, practicing privately and in two stints with the District Attorney's Office, the second as Chief Assistant. Later appointed to head a state agency, Dep was recruited to design an Anti-Piracy Task Force for the Satellite Broadcasting & Communications Association, creating a national task force of former FBI agents, while serving as the SBCA's General Counsel.Dep was admitted to practice before state and federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. He served as Chair of the State Bar Prison & Jail Problems Committee, vice-chair of the ABA Criminal Justice Section Corrections & Sentencing Committee, and chair of subcommittees on Correctional Education, Electronic Incarceration, and Victim Restitution.  A graduate of the NDAA Career Prosecutor Course, Dep was also named a Life Fellow of the Georgia Bar Foundation. He was also cross-designated as a federal prosecutor.Dep later left the SBCA to serve as a consultant to the Edison Project, a planned nationwide network of cutting-edge private schools conceived by Chris Whittle, the visionary founder and head of Whittle Communications, working with Benno Schmidt, the former President of Yale University, and Hamilton Jordan, former Chief of Staff to President Jimmy Carter.Eventually, to the momentary consternation of his mother, Dep walked away from the legal field to pursue his dream--acting, writing, and directing for the stage and film. He moved to New York City and studied with renowned acting teacher, mentor and friend, Fred Kareman. Now residing in the Los Angeles area, Dep continues to act, write, direct and produce, for the stage, television and film. He is currently Chairman of Isle of Hope Entertainment, LLC and is launching production of the first of a series of nine feature films.

No spoilers but book makes things very clear as to who did what and puts the finger on crooked lawyers.savannah is my home town and makes me sad that the people i grew up respecting are just a bunch of dishonest cads.

I was a huge fan of "Midnight" but felt there was more to the story. "Lawyer Games" fills in all the missing pieces...and them some. I had many questions about the Wiliams' trials and no where to find the answers. Dep Kirkland has written an astounding account of this murder mystery. He takes you into the scene of the crime and beyond with true and fascinating details that only a person connected to the story could do.A 5 star read! I would recommend the "Deluxe Edition" with color photos.

Pogo is a long running comic strip that has appeared in the daily newspapers since 1948. Children like it because it is about funny talking animals. Adults see it as political satire. Pogo is an Opossum who lives in the Okefenokee Swamp on the southern border of Georgia next to Florida. Pogo Possum lives with his many animal friends, including Albert Alligator, Howland Owl (who always wears glasses), Churchill "Churchy" LaFemme, a mud turtle by trade who enjoys composing songs and poems, Beauregard Bugleboy, a hound dog, Porky Pine, a porcupine, and Alabaster Alligator. Pogo is usually fishing for food and when he catches one of his friends he is often on the verge of eating his friend but then is talked out of it. This particular series of episodes was published during the 1952 election campaign for US President. The Okefenokee Swamp where Pogo and his friends live is 600 miles from Washington DC. In spite of this distance, they decide to run Pogo for US President. Their campaign slogan is “I Go Pogo” which is a take off on the election campaign for President Eisenhower, who ran under the campaign slogan of “I Like Ike”. As you see, the cover of this book shows people holding signs. These are people campaigning for Pogo for President. All of the cartoons contain sarcastic references to the leading issues of the day, such as the fact that there are too many national holidays.

This is the classic work which started these Pogo trade paperback series in the pre-Jurrassic age. Of a not so innocent age, that is to say. If politics can be skewered by the likes of a comic strip artist--(actually, Walt Kelly did a lot of illustration in his day and a lot of work for the Disney studios. Check out his funny animal work in "Dumbo") in the 40's and 50's and still have poignancy and bite some fifty years later, then, I'd say it would be still worth a look see.Anyway, it is HY-LArry-Yous! Albert the Aligator, Churchez LaFemme, Tammany Hall, Porky, PT Bear (whose grandiose pronounciations look as if they were ripped from a circus poster), Howland Owl, Bun Rabbit, Porky, the Grundoon kids and various creatures who look like J. Edgar Hoover, Winston Churchill and General MacArthur all are part of getting (or conspiring to stop) Mr. Pogo to Washington. There are crazy side plots like Albert's drive to flimflam Miz Beaver out of another free dinner, but overall, these turn out to be more tolerable mishaps than those that could come from the District of Columbia. Pogo gets my vote for President, Vice President, Senator, Swamp Keeper AND Dog Catcher...As a aside, the only three strips today that come close to this political awareness and/or funny animal lunacy are "Doonesbury" "Over the Hedge" and "Zippy"...And, by the way, original copies of this can cost somewhere in the neigborhood of $75-200 on auction sites such as the one here on Amazon and E-bay. It is reprinted in Pogo 1 and 2, I believe.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I go, too By wiredweird Pogo, if you have not yet learned to love him, is a peaceful `possum in the Okeefenokee swamp. This book follows the meandering story of him and his friends, through events that parody our culture still - more than fifty years after this was originally published. There's the poetry slam, with plenty of slamming when one entry comes written on a stone slab. Albert the alligator need not have produced such a weighty work to win, though. It turned out that his competitor's entries plagiarized his daughter's homework. Churchy the turtle composes his alliterative and inscrutable songs at every event, whether the others want it or not. P.T. Bridgeport announces everything and everyone with bombast, and the communistic cowbirds start their campaign to redistribute the wealth - other peoples' of course. (BTW, in real life, cowbirds parasitize other species by laying their eggs in other species's nests.)Then, with the 1952 presidential campaign heating up in the real world, Pogo's campaign starts in the cartoon world of the swamp. Pogo, as always, doesn't realize this is happening until well into the campaign. His gentle and soft-spoken way wins out in the end: the others can play at any silly game they want. He simply goes on about his business, without the slightest impoliteness or the slightest need to join in the foofaraw. That, I think, is Pogo's real lesson. Back then, people could disagree without being disagreeable. If one didn't like what another was doing, they just went their own way instead. How did we lose that civil tone? In its day, Pogo offered social and political commentary - and it does in our day, too, but in a very different way.-- wiredweird

They seriously come in handy when u need to catch up on a series this long fast and dont break the bank! Just need to watch the packaging, mine came a little bent on the corner and also watch the spine, the covers they use to wrap these things are flimsier (probably to compensate for the thickness of the book) but other than that i cant complain!

These several volumes included in this 3-in-1 edition are probably some of my favorites so far in the series! If you're a skip beat fan definitely get your hands on this fast! The story is excellent and Nakamura does a great job at making you laugh even during a tense situation. The shipping was right on time but the back cover had a fold in it across the whole cover which was dissapointing since I really try and keep my books in good condition. The fold wasn't so severe that it was permanent so some shelf time will help it flatten out. However, i bought this with several other skip beat 3-in-1 editions and it wasn't the only one with a big fold down the center. That's the only reason why I gave this 4 stars. Otherwise the story and product itself more than deserves 5.

I adore the characters, plot, and comedic/romantic tones that it carries. The three volume combination is such a great money saver for me as I have been waiting to own this series for a loooong time now. The quality of the pages are thinner but that doesn't deter away from the art or contrast quality. Please continue with the series 3-in-1 and Yoshiki Nakamura, continue your wonderful work!

In Leningrad: Siege and Symphony, Brian Moynahan sets the composition of Shostakovich’s most famous work-his seventh symphony- against the tragic canvas of the siege itself and the years of repression and terror that preceded it. Using a wealth of new material, Moynahan tells the story of the cruelties inflicted by Stalin and Hitler on a city of exquisite beauty and rich cultural history, and the symphony that inspired its survival.

Leningrad: Siege and Symphony: The Story of the Great City Terrorized by Stalin, Starved by Hitler, Immortalized by Shostakovich, by Brian Moynahan

Review "Like a movie camera, [Moynahan] zooms in and out on the besieged civilians, the bitterly cold troops on the city’s edge and the simultaneous efforts of Shostakovich to set these experiences to music from the relative safety of evacuation… This multi-perspective approach makes for a gripping story… Moynahan’s Leningrad: Siege and Symphony vividly brings to life a hero city that refused to die."—New York Times Book Review"A passionate and moving book...nothing short of masterly."—Wall Street Journal"A narrative that is by turns painful, poignant and inspiring"—Minneapolis Star Tribune"Moynahan...is a vivid writer, and his account bulges with the reminiscences and contemporaneous accounts of participants; the accumulation of individual experience sears his narrative while sometimes threatening to overwhelm it. He reaches into the guts of the city to extract some humanity from the blood and darkness, and at its best Leningrad captures the heartbreak, agony and small salvations in both death and survival...Moynahan’s descriptions of the battlefield, which also draw from the diaries of the cold, lice-ridden, hungry combatants, are haunting."—Washington Post"As Moynahan reveals, the real story of the symphony’s genesis and its triumph was more complex and more tragic than is generally understood…Combining a full description of the birth of the Seventh Symphony with a rich and horrifying account of the hell that was Leningrad under siege, this selection brings new depth and drama to a key historical moment”—Booklist (starred review)“The technique, if not the scale, is Tolstoyan . . .The terrible beauty of the book is in its anecdotal detail, and the horror is of a kind that makes you weep but at times approaches comedy . . . It’s certainly hard to imagine reading his gripping, skillfully woven account without emotion.”—Stephen Walsh, Spectator (UK)“Brian Moynahan interweaves three gripping stories in this compelling kaleidoscope of war-ravaged Leningrad: Hilter's 900-day siege, Stalin's purges that decimated the city's professional and cultural leaders and Dmitri Shostakovich's desperate struggle to write his haunting Seventh Symphony. Its performance by half-starved musicians between bouts of German shelling attests to the triumph of the human spirit amidst the greatest upheaval of the twentieth century.”—Angela Stent, author of The Limits of Partnership: US-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century and professor at Georgetown University.“Leningrad: Siege and Symphony is a remarkable achievement. Brian Moynahan holds the reader in suspense while teaching an important chapter in the history of the Second World War. His magnificent tale portrays the terror within and without Leningrad during its heroic defiance of the Nazi conquerors and subtle resistance to its Stalinist masters. Like Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony, this is a triumph.”—Charles Glass, author of Americans in Paris: Life and Death Under Nazi Occupation and The Deserters: A Hidden History of World War II“A stupendous story, driven by a furious narrative yet biblical in its thematic confrontations of beauty and evil. It’s vivid in three dimensions: The Red Army’s battles with Hitler’s war machine; the ordeals of the Russian people terrorized by the malevolent maniac in the Kremlin; and throughout the faint but swelling counterpoint of hope as the great Dmitri Shostakovich struggles to write the score of his Seventh Symphony to express the soul of his martyred city . . . This is history to cherish.”—Sir Harold Evans, Editor at Large at Reuters, author of The American Century, and publisher of The Russian Century“Beautifully written and profoundly moving, Leningrad is a stunning, haunting book that has stayed with me long after I turned the last page.”—James Holland, author of Dam Busters“A bold attempt to set the composition of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony within the extraordinary context of its times”—Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday (London)

About the Author Brian Moynahan's books include the much-praised William Tyndale: If God Spare My Life. As a foreign correspondent, he covered fighting in the Far and Middle East and Africa, and was latterly the European Editor of the London Sunday Times.

Leningrad Symphony By S Riaz Subtitled, "martyred by Stalin, starved by Hitler, immortalised by Shostakovich" it is clear before you even open this book that you are in for an emotive read. This is an incredible book about a city besieged by the Germans, starved, under attack, living in fear of their own regime and yet still able to remain defiant. Stalin notoriously disliked Leningrad, believing them bourgeois and distrusting their links with the Romanov family, while Hitler declared that Leningrad 'must disappear utterly from the face of the earth."This, then, is the story of the siege of Leningrad and of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony, the 'Leningrad Symphony'; composed partly in the city as the Germans closed in and then finished after the composer and his family were flown to Moscow in 1941. The work was performed in Moscow, London and New York. Could it though, be played in Leningrad itself? It was a huge work, demanding an orchestra of over one hundred musicians. Yet the Leningrad Philharmonia had been evacuated to Siberia and only the Radio Orchestra remained in the city - or what was left of them. The handful of members still alive were weakened by disease, hunger and the cold. Jazz musicians and members of dance or regimental bands were enlisted to play. Many died before the performance and those still alive could only rehearse for minutes at a time, unable to muster the energy to play. Shostakovich stated that, "I wanted to create the image of our embattled country, to engrave it in music.""There has," the author states, "never been a performance to match it." On Sunday 9th August, 1942, the 'Leningrad Symphony' was first played to a city besieged by the Germans since September 1941. The German guns were less than seven miles from the Philharmonia Hall when the concert took place and yet, even under German fire and with a depleted and exhausted orchestra, the residents of Leningrad flocked to the Philharmonia. Skeletons dressed their pre-war finery it was an act of brave defiance. The author recreates this historical event in wonderful detail and explains what it meant - both to the people of Leningrad itself and the rest of the world. For example, it gave the Allies belief in the Russians and the story of their resistance and the performance of the piece (the score flown in over German lines) became a sensation. He also asks what the truth really was. Shostakovich certainly loved his city and cared about it, but even before the Germans arrived it was terrorised by Stalin. A city where even such a seemingly harmless hobby, such as stamp collecting, could be seen as a dangerous and anti Soviet activity.Leningrad suffered terrible horrors under German bombardment as winter set in and food ran out. There was constant shelling, bombs falling, freezing temperatures and terrible hunger. The Germans also suffered from the weather, as the cold froze sentries to death, jammed their weapons and left them suffering and vulnerable in insufficient winter clothing. In Leningrad itself, the author tells terrible, heart rending stories of human suffering, of how people resorted to cannibalism, were starved, frozen and exhausted and yet still the purges, arrests and denounciations of the Stalinist regime continued unabaited; adding even more horror onto an intolerable situation. This then is a brilliant account of that music, that city and that time, which will undoubtedly stay with you for a long time should you read it. If you like this book, and I have no doubt that you will, you might also enjoy the novel The Conductor, which is also about the performance of the Leningrad Symphony.

Zinkl Like one of the previous reviewers, I was interested in this book because of the Shostakovich connection. Once you realize that you're reading basically a diary of events, it becomes easier to read. People come and go during the pages at a good clip, I dare anyone to catalog all the names that come through. It wasn't the page turner I had hoped it would be, but Moynahan ends the book well.

I was there with other members of SouthWest BrassWorks, the faculty brass quintet at Texas State University. St. Petersburg is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. We were only there for a few days, but performed at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and stayed at the historic Astoria Hotel. When I noted that Brian Moynahan's hardcover book would be released in October 2014 I ordered immediately. I was not disappointed! That said, this was not an easy read. Moynahan's attention to detail and his story telling ability made the horrors of those terrible days come to life. The perspective alternates between following the life of Shostakovich and his writing of the 7th symphony, and of one besieged in Leningrad. Moynahan paints with stark reality the dangers of living in an atheistic society with a nefarious dictator, Stalin, and his perverse henchman, Beria, head of the NKVD, later to become the KGB. He reveals to us what it was like for a sensitive, frail genius like Dmitri Shostakovich to live and work in an environment in which he faced enemies on two fronts, the invading Germans, and the ever watchful eye of Stalin and Beria. Shostakovich became everyman's hero with his 7th Symphony, written during the Siege of Leningrad. On a more personal note, twice Moynahan mentioned A. Anisimov. I wonder if he was related to Boris Anisimov, an elderly gentleman who we met in 1992 and who gave us some of his compositions and arrangements. This book is highly recommended for musicians, historians, and anyone interested in ways people survive in the most difficult of circumstances.

Texas is now hidden in a dense pine forest.   Anthropologists have long divided American Indian cultures into southeastern and southwestern cultural areas. the Choctaw-Apache represent a distinct mix between these “food areas.”  Choctaw-Apache foodways are influenced by numerous cultural regions and ecological niches (river bottomland, southern forests, plains, desert) along the Camino Real de los Tejas (northeastern Mexico, Texas, Louisiana) and the culture region of the U.S. Southeast, as well as hundreds of years of cultural interactions between so-called “old world” and indigenous groups. The subject matter of this book has long been a mystery to outsiders. The cuisine developed from a longstanding cultural exchange between tribes of the southwest and southeast, and the colonial-era Spanish and French.  These multiple food influences crossed cultural boundaries in the 18th and early 19th century to blend into a distinctive local cuisine that serves as an ethnic marker that sets this American Indian community apart from surrounding groups. In the past, both mystery and fear kept the outside world at arm’s length.  This book brings the community’s cuisine and its rich history to a broad audience.

Review Choctaw-Apache Foodways provides a fascinating look at the distinctive history, culture, and foods of one of Louisiana’s Native peoples.  Robert Caldwell seamlessly incorporates his tribe’s culinary traditions within an absorbing ethnohistorical narrative that feeds your intellectual hunger, but leaves you craving some of that delicious food.  Luckily, there are recipes included—for food and for food sovereignty. -Brian Klopotek, author of Recognition Odysseys: Indigeneity, Race, and Federal Tribal Recognition Policy in Three Louisiana Indian CommunitiesRobert Caldwell’s book Choctaw-Apache Foodways fills in a gap in the documentation of Louisiana traditional cultures. From the garden to the table, it explores the importance of foodways as an ethnic marker for this cultural enclave.       -Maida Owens, Louisiana Folklife Program Director.

By isaac This is a very unique book that combines recipes, oral history, and a look at the culture of the Choctaw-Apache tribe to which author Robert Caldwell belongs. An introduction presents a background of the tribe's history in a way that would be of interest to those learning about their own heritage and the general public as well. I appreciated Caldwell's attention to the role of bigger social and economic forces as well as local customs. After that the book is divided into sections devoted to various key ingredients and cooking techniques, both recent and traditional "old time" culinary heritage.I found the conclusion, which focuses on both the individual health and wellness and community-building aspects of food culture, inspiring. I don't know of other "cookbooks" which are as thoughtful about the role of the food they feature.

Caldwell's book is a wonderful example of the role of food in cultural identity By Marie Richards Caldwell's book is a wonderful example of the role of food in cultural identity. Whether an every day dish or special occasion, food ties families and communities together. There is a friendly flow to the pages that invites the reader to try the included recipes as well as think of the role of food in their own family. As more Native communities join in the efforts to decolonize their diets books such as Caldwell's will serve as important examples and inspiration for other communities to discuss their foodways.

It mixes rigorous historiography with a light touch that keeps the reader engaged. I would recommend this book highly to both historians and chefs.

The first clear image of the human spirit was photographed accidentally, after the death of the author’s mother. This is the story of the taking and the subsequent authenticating and evaluating of the photograph by leading world experts. We may well have here the fulcrum for humanity to lift the veil from the other side(s). This picture is objective evidence: a picture worth 100,000 words. There has not been a comparable objective revelation. Gary E. Schwartz (Professor of Psychology, Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Surgery, and Director of the Laboratory for Post-Materialist Science and Spirituality, at the University of Arizona; author of The Afterlife Experiments, The G.O.D. Experiment, The Energy Healing Experiments, and The Sacred Promise) writes in the Foreword: “You are about to read a one-of-a-kind and likely history-making book. I only have one concern about this book. The book is so interesting, Williams’ life is so extraordinary (and eccentric), the author is so colorful and such a superb storyteller, that the scientific and spiritual significance of his apparent afterlife communication account may become overshadowed by his life. “Of course, this makes for fun reading, and I personally enjoyed the book immensely. However, the primary reason I decided to write this Foreword was to make sure that you, the reader, recognize the potential profundity of what Williams has discovered, and what it might mean for science as well as our personal lives.”

The unintentional captured image of his mother’s spirit above her body an hour or so after her death lead Paul Williams to write this book. To me it is about much more than the photo. It’s an odd feeling typing those words as I sit here. The book itself goes far beyond the photo and Williams' own struggle to understand, disprove and accept his own doubts of what is in the photo. He travels and meets with the world’s greatest experts in Parapsychology and photo authenticity. With apprehension Williams shows the photo to his closest friends and family most who are disinterested or skeptical of the photo. It is undeniable that the photo is incredible but, I too, thought there must be some scientific explanation or maybe a reflection or phone glitch. While reading my entire perception was turned upside down... I’m a believer now. As he puts it, from, “Agnostic to ignoramus.” The book is full of humor and wit from his own life. Certainly Paul Williams life has been extraordinary. He has gone from Summa cum laude at Harvard to marrying one of the richest heiresses in the world and divorcing without taking any money. He studied with Oscar Icharazo and helped Huey Newton of the Black Panthers escape the United States. His experience with Dilgo Rinpoche, the current Dali Lamas most influential teacher, is out of this world. The book is beautifully written with incredible imagery and insight into his own life. But more than anything the book Williams has written reminded of my own spirit and consciousness and that I’m not a money making machine for my family to pay for: mortgages, bills, clothes and food etc… Dare I say, it's uplifting! Come to your own conclusion but I highly recommend you read Paul Williams book, “Image of a Spirit.

By Michael Tymn Paul Williams, the author, offers a digital camera image of an anomaly produced by his Blackberry cell phone at his mother’s deathbed. It appears to show a small hominoid-like figure just above his mother’s lifeless body, a figure not visible to Williams or the two women present, except on the photograph. After having ruled out stray reflections or other optical distortions, Williams began to wonder is this small blurry image could somehow be the spirit of his mother leaving her body after death. The photo was taken an hour and 45 minutes after his mother expired, at the age of 92, on December 27, 2009 in Manhattan. Williams’s girlfriend, Melissa, and a Jamaican hospice attendant, were cleaning and dressing the corpse when the photo was snapped. Several other photos were taken from different angles, but the strange figure showed up on only that one photo. Even though he is an accomplished photographer, Williams had the photo examined by Dr. Hany Farid, a digital forensic expert, who confirmed that it showed no signs of manipulation or alteration and otherwise attested to the authenticity of the photo.Williams further consulted Dr. Andrew Weil, founder of the field of integrative medicine, Dr. Dean Radin, senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Studies, Dr. Gary Schwartz, director of the Laboratory for Post-Materialist Science and Spirituality at the University of Arizona, and Loyd Auerbach, a well-known authority on ESP, hauntings, and ghost-related phenomena, all of whom were puzzled by the photo. “...you have probably heard the phrase, a picture can be worth a 1,000 words,” Schwartz wrote in the Foreword of Williams’s book. “Well, this picture is worth 100,000 words and then some.”Williams also reported that his mother’s last words, repeated again and again, were “Esther, Esther...” The name did not ring a bell with him, but when he later questioned his daughter, Zoe, she recalled that her grandmother spoke fondly of a childhood playmate named Esther Smoke. Williams was able to confirm that she had died three years earlier.A 1965 Phi Beta Kappa Harvard graduate, Williams considers himself a rational thinker and was not prepared to accept the mysterious object in the photo as the spirit of his mother leaving her body without discussing it with the aforementioned scientists and subjecting it to a more complete discernment. The book details his search for answers.

Wells Collecting: Axis: Carnage #1-3--Axis: Hobgoblin #1-3Bonus: 4 Pages of Lozano's Carnage SketchesThis graphic novel collects two miniseries that spun out of the main Marvel Avengers & X-Men: Axis event. In the main Axis event, the Nazi super villain Red Skull grafts Professor X's brain to his own in order to make a bid to take over the world. Dr. Strange, Dr. Doom, and the Scarlet Witch attempt to reorient to moral axis of the Marvel universe in order to stop the Red Skull. With unintended consequences the original Hobgoblin and symbiote maniac Carnage have overwhelming compulsions to become heroes! The two stories (Carnage and Hobgoblin) do not intersect and read as stand alone series. The better of the two is the Carnage story. Carnage desperate and inexplicably wants to be a hero. Between his destructive tendencies and macabre flashes from his murderous subconscious, Carnage's attempts to become a superhero don't go according to plan. This miniseries culminates in a battle with Sin-Eater and an almost bittersweet betrayal. This story is 5-stars action and entertainment. Creating a Carnage who elicits empathy from readers is a tall order, and writer Rick Spears completely captured the almost heartbreaking attempt of something pathologically evil desperately trying to be someone good. The Hobgoblin miniseries, on the other hand, never quite rises to the same level of storytelling that the Carnage story achieves. The original Hobgoblin becomes a superhero and self-help guru, dedicating himself to making everyone the best they can be. Past goblins and would-be goblins attempt to stop the reformed Hobgoblin. However the Hobgoblin story ends with a direct tie the Axis main series, so it makes sense to read this story after Uncanny Avengers Volume 5: Axis Prelude and before the main Avengers & X-Men: Axis event. If you enjoy a big Marvel event as much as I do, this collection is worth picking up. Sometimes comicbooks rise above the genre fiction and manage capture something more: the Carnage mini-series is one of these wonderful moments in comic writing. Unfortunately the Hobgoblin series doesn't quite rise to the same level. However the Hobgoblin series does tease a lead-in to the Axis main event, so readers who plan on picking up the event book will want to read this one first.

Wonderful artwork and a well told plot. Carnage is hilarious and I'd love to see where they would go with this in future titles.

This riveting and utterly unique memoir chronicles the coming of age of Cynthia Shamash, an Iraqi Jew born in Baghdad in 1963. When she was eight, her family tried to escape Iraq over the Iranian border, but they were captured and jailed for five weeks. Upon release, they were returned to their home in Baghdad, where most of their belongings had been confiscated and the door of their home sealed with wax. They moved in with friends and applied for passports to spend a ten-day vacation in Istanbul, although they never intended to return. From Turkey, the family fled to Tel Aviv and then to Amsterdam, where Cynthia’s father soon died of a heart attack. At the age of twelve, Sanuti (as her mother called her) was sent to London for schooling, where she lived in an Orthodox Jewish enclave with the chief rabbi and his family. At the end of the school year, she returned to Holland to navigate her teen years in a culture that was much more sexually liberal than the one she had been born into, or indeed the one she was experiencing among Orthodox Jews in London. Shortly after finishing her schooling as a dentist, Cynthia moved to the United States in an attempt to start over. This vivid, beautiful, and very funny memoir will appeal to readers intrigued by spirituality, tolerance, the personal ramifications of statelessness and exile, the clashes of cultures, and the future of Iraq and its Jews.

The Strangers We Became: Lessons in Exile from One of Iraq's Last Jews (HBI Series on Jewish Women), by Cynthia Kaplan Shamash

Review "Shamash’s writing beautifully communicates the confusion, imagination, and resilience that she experienced as a child from the trauma, displacement, and possibility of immigration, all caused by anti-Semitism. She weaves her story so well that the reader truly feels what the author has lived. It is only at the end of her tale that one must reckon with the impacts of poverty and instability on Shamash and her family and acknowledge the courage they all have shown in building new lives in unfamiliar places. The story moves quickly, so that there is much for a reader to absorb—perhaps too much—but then Shamash holds the events and the emotion so expertly in sync that the power of the story is enhanced rather than lessened by the fast pace.” —Jewish Book World

Review “Cynthia Kaplan Shamash has produced a deeply moving memoir of exile and longing centered around her Iraqi Jewish family as they navigate an increasingly perilous world marked by cruel, often deadly anti-Jewish attacks. Wondrous and poetic, but also searing and terrifying, this is a stirring and important contribution to the literature exploring what became of the Jews of Arab lands.” (Lucette Lagnado, author of The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit)“Powerful and moving, Shamash’s book is a fascinating odyssey, as well as a treasure trove for anthropologists in its riveting testimony of the last days of Jewish society in Iraq and its re-planting in the strange soil of the West. Communicated with surprising humor and jest, her descriptions of the puzzlement and confusion she felt, but also her defiance, are a masterpiece.” (Amatzia Baram, director of the Center for Iraq Studies, University of Haifa)

About the Author Considered an expert on the Iraqi-Jewish archive and diaspora, CYNTHIA KAPLAN SHAMASH has spoken widely about her experiences and published an op-ed in the New York Times. She was elected to the board of the World Organization of Jews from Iraq in 2011 and currently lives in New York City, where she has her own dentistry practice and is married with five children.

An engrossing read By Harkin (Boulder, CO) This is an excellent book about the personal sacrifices and difficulties of adjusting to new cultures after being displaced from one's county. Ms. Shamash details her experiences with humor but stays true to relaying the obstacles faced by those escaping to what they hope are better lands.

The story is so poignant that it often brought me to tears. It gave me a greater perspective for the plight of our current day's refugees.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A delightful memoir of the author's life as a Jew ... By DianeFHWD A delightful memoir of the author's life as a Jew living in Iraq where anti Semitism is rampant and vile. The story is masterfully written placing the reader directly in the throes of the hardships experienced by Dr. Kaplan Shamash. It describes her puzzlement as a young girl as to why she and her family are treated as spies and forced to leave the country of her birth. And yet, despite these conditions, it is written with honesty and humor. More importantly, the book is an inspiration to anyone living under a government that persecutes individuals for their religious beliefs.

Alex D'Amour was an unexpected and unwanted guest, especially after Elissa Crosby found out why he had come to her Inn. Alex claimed to be the owner of not only D'Amour mansion, but that he also owned Elissa's Inn. He has the paperwork to prove his claim. Elissa and her sisters had gone together to purchase the Inn. They met there every Christmas. They purchased it from the retiring caretaker. While Elissa waited to hear from her lawyer, she had to deal with Alex as well as a few other unexpected problems. Until Elissa found out whether Alex's claim was legitimate or not, she asked him not to tell her family, and to pretend they were friends. There was the small problem of an unwanted attraction to him. This was due to the myth of the mansion. Also, her family was of no help because they kept pushing her towards Alex. It didn't help that Alex teased her and had an easy going charm. This is the third book in the enchanted brides series. The other two are To Marry A Stranger (#3470), and Married By Mistake! (#3488). This story moves along smoothly. There is humor, suspenseful danger and lots of family fun. Set at Christmas time, it makes a Holiday read that you shouldn't miss reading.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The best of the three! By Amazon Customer This is the third of three books, each centered around one of three sisters. This is the heaviest and most dramatic of the three books, starring the oldest sister. I love her character's in-control attitude, and the male lead is funny, sarcastic, and very generous. My only issue was the ending, which could have been resolved a MONTH ago, but it's a happy ending that's still suitably adorable.

Nathaniel Yancey just wants a little peace and quiet. Born into a wealthy Charleston, South Carolina, family, he much prefers a simple, tranquil retreat to the adventurous life chosen by so many of his nine rambunctious brothers. His profession? A clergyman, destined to serve the Lord. Having just graduated from The Fold of the Faithful Seminary in St. Louis, he has been assigned to a church in Virginia City, Nevada, whose pastor was recently killed in an accident. The place is supposed to be peaceful. It’s supposed to be quiet. He looks forward to sharing his residence with a housekeeper, doing charitable work, ministering to his flock, and reading the Good Book. Upon arrival, however, he is shocked and stunned to discover that, contrary to his expectations, the parsonage is swamped by females: the six daughters of Reverend Winthrop—three adult women and three young children aged four, five, and six—and an extraordinary “do all/be all” former lady of the evening, who runs the place. Even the cat is female, and chaos rules. Nathaniel feels overwhelmed. And a trifle resentful. Why wasn’t he warned in advance of this situation? What about his dream of a restful, retiring life in the mountains of a mining town? He would like nothing more than to pack up the whole kit and caboodle and ship them off somewhere. However, after a long and enlightening talk with Delilah, the housekeeper, he realizes that evidently he is stuck here, and everyone will have to adjust to the new arrangements. One small crisis involving the “littlers” follows another, but somehow he copes, resolving each problem as it arises. Soon, he has accepted what must be, settling in and endearing himself to his foster family and his congregation. The fly in the ointment lives next door, and her name is Parris Porter. A spinster, and likely to remain so, she has eyes for the handsome pastor, and is not shy about letting him know. Meanwhile, the handsome pastor has eyes of his own for Miss Caroline Winthrop, eldest daughter of The Little Chapel’s former minister. Except that she has been keeping company with a well-to-do banker, and is well on her way to a formal engagement. All seems fair in love and war, and Nathaniel is resigned to losing the love of his life. Then baby Hollie goes missing. And Nathaniel finds out that he is meant to be here, after all, doing what he does best.

By LuC Come along and join Nate as he takes his first church.....complete with a parsonage filled with the former deceased pastor's six daughters, his reformed and redeemed ex-saloon girl housekeeper, and a species confused cat. Add a nosy, nasty spinster neighbor-slash- parishioner for a book that touches your heart, as well as your funny bone. The author left me wanting more.

NATHANIEL YANCEY GOT TO THE PARSONAGE OF HIS FIRST CHURCH TO FIND SEVEN FEMALES LIVING THERE By Dorothy Hendrickson Nathaniel Yancey got the surprise of his life when he got to the personage that was to be his home. He had a housekeeper named delilah. Three young women Caroline 20, Portia 19, and Christina 18, then there were three little ones, Emmie 6, Lonnie 5, and Hollis 4. The three oldest daughters were children of the pastor who passed away, and the three little ones he took in when their parents died. This story has some serious and some very funny parts to it. His housekeeper was from a different background and her dresses show it.

I love how the story goes and how can it excites me every time I continue this novel. I love how they describe each of the situation, very clear and I can clearly imagine each of the scene. I also love the idea that they only use simple words which for me is a factor. And as a reader, I would definitely recommend this. IF you want to spend your leisure time in a very productive and fun way, better grab this book up.

At last a simple easy to understand written guide for FasterEFT By J9 I am a practitioner of FasterEFT and I WISH this was available when I was first discovering this amazing methodology. It takes the process of FasterEFT and shows complete beginners what it is, how to use it and goes on to explain the many variations in techniques, the underlying belief system and associated history. If you are new to FEFT it's a fantastic way to understand all of the information you can read online and hundreds of videos you are watching, and simplifies it and makes what you are seeing and practising, understandable. As a practitioner of FasterEFT (particularly those learning online), this is GOLD! A fantastic reference for your learning and practice.
