Timed with the centennial of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) of 1915, Jewel City presents a large and representative selection of artworks from the fair, emphasizing the variety of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints that greeted attendees. It is unique in its focus on the works of art that were scattered among the venues of the exposition—the most comprehensive art exhibition ever shown on the West Coast. Notably, the PPIE included the first American presentations of Italian Futurism, Austrian Expressionism, and Hungarian avant-garde painting, and there were also major displays of paintings by prominent Americans, especially those working in the Impressionist style. This lavishly illustrated catalogue features works by masters such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Robert Henri, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Edvard Munch, Oskar Kokoschka, Umberto Boccioni, and many more. The volume also explores the PPIE’s distinctive murals program, developments in the art of printmaking, and the legacy of the French Pavilion, which hosted an abundance of works by Auguste Rodin and inspired the founding and architecture of the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. A rich and fascinating study of a critical moment in American and European art history, Jewel City is indispensable for understanding both the United States’ and California’s role in the reception of modernism as well as the region’s historical place on the international art stage. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Exhibition dates: de Young Museum, San Francisco: October 17, 2015–January 10, 2016

By jpcooper "Jewel City: Art from the Panama Pacific International Exposition" is the third significant work issued in the last year commemorating this fair's 100th anniversary. I pre-ordered this book several month's ago and anxiously awaited its arrival. It certainly didn't disappoint! As the title suggests, this latest offering focuses on the exposition’s art. Four hundred pages of beautiful paintings, etchings, sculpture, photography and murals! From the selection of the images to the production standards, everything about this book is First Class! Unlike so many pictorials, its subjects are given generous, nearly full-page treatment. And the color and resolution are spot-on perfect. For those of us who have had a love affair with this exposition these three books have been a dream come true. All three, San Francisco’s Jewel City: The PPIE of 1915 ( Ackley), Panorama: Tales from San Francisco’s 1915 PPIE (Bruno) and this latest work, are must have additions to our library.Jewel City is important too in that it very effectively demonstrates the shift from classical, “realistic”, academy-sanctioned art to the increasingly popular impressionistic and “modern” schools. Many of the images selected for this work have California themes. Which, as a native of this state, I found of particular interest. There is also a considerable amount of attention given to etchings and woodblock prints that highlight California’s spectacular landscape. If this fair has been an interest of yours, you absolutely should own this book. Couldn’t recommend it more highly! For a more general view of the exposition Ackley’s volume is a must have as well. I own hundreds of art books and this one ranks right up their with the best of my collection. With the Amazon discount it’s a steal at $50. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed with this purchase.

Barrows Easily one of the greatest art exhibitions with the greatest talents that has ever been under one roof! I Was Amazed! This book suffers from the same problem that most museum exhibition books suffer from. The quality of the pictures in the book is of a low standard with low quality printing. The detail and color quality is poor and a big disappointment. I'm hoping that whoever takes care of the printing for these books will see this and start putting more care and a higher standard printing into their books. The calendar for this exhibit has a higher standard of printing than this book so I recommend getting it instead, I did.
