By SusieQ It's like trying to find an honest mechanic, to try and find a realistic Harlequin, but it's even more disappointing when you find one that starts out with a semi-realistic plot and a believable heroine, and then the plot and the heroine take a nosedive into something called Unreality Land.Jenna is a single mother -- the ex-husband has been lousy, and he's completely out of the picture. So Jenna, with her huge mortgage, (and lovely looks & petite body), takes a job as a legal assistant to a top barrister, Alex, who is not only brilliant, he's not at all hard on the eyes. The author has the sense not to bring them together TOO quickly, although the instant attraction is crackling. So far, pretty good. Then the plot goes into overdrive. The absent, lousy ex-husband is suddenly front & center, attempting to take custody of the child he never cared about before, and is also subtly abusive to Jenna, causing her to have little accidents, etc. Jenna, having been established as determined and stubborn and trying to get ahead, becomes a milquetoast, allowing the ex-husband to step on her feet (literally) without retaliation, and bang her with doors (all "accidentally"). She also allows her attraction to Alex to get way out of hand.Meanwhile, Alex is ordering Jenna around, insisting on taking her to lunch and on buying clothes for her when he deems her wardrobe to be inappropriate. She fusses, she fumes, but never refuses anything. She feels can't leave the job because she's getting such great pay.The initially interesting plot quickly degenerates into been there, read that (several Harlequins ago). The hero becomes so unfortunately Alpha-male controlling, and the heroine becomes a simpy-wimpy girl. I also hate the fact that one good conversation between the hero and heroine will clear up their relationship problems--and that they don't have that conversation until close to the end of the story. If this story had only stuck to its more realistic beginning, it could have rated a Very Good 4 stars; as it is, because it's readable if unbelieveable, I have to downgrade it to a Consider Carefully Before You Buy 3 stars (although frankly, I'm wondering why the heck I'm not giving two stars).

By KayLovesToRead His Secretary Mistress by Chantelle ShawHarlequin Presents # 2546 - June 2006Mistress to a Millionaire themed seriesJenna can't believe her bad luck; her bus was cancelled, it's pouring rain, her stockings are ruined, and she's late on her first day of a new job. And that gorgeous man she'd been tostled against in the shop doorway out of the rain, has turned out to be her new boss, Alex Morell. Their attraction is instant and combustible. Jenna needs her job, so she lets her boss believe she is not available and she hides the fact that she's a single mother. When they travel on business things heat up beyond their control and Jenna knows that she has to tell Alex all her secrets. Alex is riddled with guilt for wanting Jenna when she's made it clear that she's not available, but he's seen battered women before and Jenna exhibits all the signs. His need to protect her surprises him. This is Ms. Shaw's debut and I was captured by this talented woven story from the first pages. Jenna is just coming out of her shell and thanks to Alex she is finding her self esteem again. Alex is captivated by Jenna's beauty and her instant come backs when he provokes her. Their struggle to keep their attraction at bay, and the secrets Jenna is hiding, keep the tension on going. However, Jenna's secret should have been revealed before Alex had gotten so involved. I felt rather uncomfortable until those truths had come out. The reasons of needing to keep her job, were not strong enough for Jenna to cause Alex the turmoil he went through. I suppose if Jenna had revealed all earlier the conflict would have been resolved too soon. I just wish Ms. Shaw had thought of another way, as both Alex and Jenna were wonderful characters that deserved more. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this love story and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Shaw :D

There are several extra annoying characters such as, the "crazy" ex-husband, ex-girlfriend\fiancé, married\divorced status, jealous co-worker, and possible custody battle. These characters\issues did encourage me to continue reading to find out the outcome, which is a positive. I felt that the heroine should have been a stronger character.
