From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up—Yuri and Valentina are part of a race of human beings who have been genetically engineered with superpowers. Setting out to explore space, they crash on Planet Gigantic in Woodmere where they face rock monsters, are imprisoned by a Queen Neva, and meet giant insects and ninjas. There are four fast-paced entries in this collection: "Planetfall," "Trapped!," "Death with a Hundred Legs," and "Apocalypse Neva." Full-color panels bring the action-packed narrative to life. Each of the artists uses a variety of vibrant colors, creating a serene atmosphere, and makes good use of light, with results that are appealing and enjoyable. Each scene has been carefully thought out, and readers will appreciate the intensity of each tableau. The entries also boast backstory vignettes called "Tales from the Planet Gigantic." These shorter stories give the book a legendary feel and will make kids feel as if the setting is more than just a fictional land. VERDICT Graphic novel fans will enjoy this high-octane compilation of sci-fi comics.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

Smith Planet Gigantic is exactly the sort of comic book I want to spend my money on and tell my friends about. To read it is to be a fan, and to be an evangelist for its energetic and fanciful world. It is an all-ages book, which doesn't mean it is watered down for young readers. Instead, it is a tale that is fulfilling for readers of any expereince. On the surface it is pure adventure storytelling, yet behind that is a world with its own mythology and heart. Most importantly, Planet Gigantic injects hope back into science fiction; tossing aside the bleak, opressed future that occupies the majority of today's future fantasy. Not only will the story capture the imagination, but so will the art. The design of the world the heroes land on is only out dazzled by the design of the creatures who inhabit that world. In many ways Planet Gigantic is the perfect science fiction comic, as it is inhabited by the ghosts of sci-fi's past pulpy greats while injecting much newness into the genre. Shades of Baum and Burroughs rise to the surface but never take the wheel from this gifted writer.Support this sort of comic or they will fade into the background of gritty, posturing stunts that pass for sequential art these days. More importantly, support this comic, and hopefully Eric and team will reward us with more. Amazing stuff that will demand rereading and sharing.
