The key to overcoming depression and anxiety and to stop living a numb, fear-based existence is in your head. Literally. By taking control of your mind and thoughts and adopting brain healthy habits, you can harness the super power we all were born with, your brain’s proven ability to change itself, neuroplasticity, to optimize operation, change negative thinking patterns, and actually alter the chemical balance and physical form and function of your brain so that happy and healthy become your default. Change your brain, change your life. I know. I did it - but only after a decade of depression ending in a suicide attempt that left me with a seriously compromised brain. In healing my brain, I healed my life. You can do it too. (No brain injury required.) I’ll tell you, in plain English backed up by science, how you can improve your brain and life through simple practices: diet and exercise mindfulness and meditation responding rather than reacting gratitude and forgiveness making friends with fear visualization, thought reframing, and more. "This book is a wonderful source of insight and understanding from someone who knows firsthand the transformative powers of the brain's plasticity." Dr. Michael Merzenich, world authority on brain plasticity and author of SoftWired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life. "Debbie Hampton gives a behind the scenes look at the workings of the mind and brain, and draws from some of the leading scientists and teachers of our time. But more than that, she weaves her own powerful story of recovery from brain injury into each chapter. She provides a refreshing and personal look into mindfulness, neuroplasticity and recovery from someone who has travelled the journey. A remarkable book that is beautifully written, compassionate and wise." Dr. Sarah McKay, neuroscientist, writer, and founder of Your Brain Health.

From the Author Your brain is neuroplastic, meaning that its structure and function are literally, physically shaped by what you do repeatedly in your life - behaviors, emotions, and even thoughts - which works both for and against you. This book is about putting it to work for your benefit. You have much more power to recover from depression, stop anxiety and worry, improve your brain's functioning, and create your own peace and happiness with the gray matter between your ears than ever thought possible. I did it. You can too.

About the Author After taking care of my brother as he wasted away and died from AIDs, the end of my 18 year marriage to my high school sweetheart in an ugly parting that made Divorce Court look civil, and years of wrong turns, things not working out, and being flat-out disappointed with life, I tried to kill myself in June of 2007, by swallowing over 90 pills, mostly brain drugs. Because I wasn't found in time, the drugs went all the way through my system wreaking destruction.  I woke up a week later from a coma with a serious brain injury to a very different world. The brain injury forced me to make radical changes in my lifestyle and mindset that I'd needed to make long before. Better late than never! Because a lot of the underlying belief systems and perceptual foundation upon which I'd built my reality withered away along with brain cells, I got to start with a clean slate, so to speak.Through years of daily effort and the practices covered in this book, I made a remarkable recovery and healed my life along with my brain. By consciously working with and altering my thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, I transformed my world which in turn, changed my physical brain and its default mode of operation.Today, I live a brain healthy life incorporating daily practices to maintain the balance and happiness I've found. Although I still talk funny and have some slight manual dexterity issues, I'm better than ever, even with these.

Redundancy and Self-Pity By Marcus Skinner Even on a purely anecdotal level, this story is probably among the most redundant I've read in my entire life; almost every chapter initially delves into the author's truly unfortunate life story with only a few brief moments of divergence before the cycle repeats. While the entire backdrop concerning brain plasticity and the author's healthy skepticism toward medication drew me in the most, it was fatiguing to hear the same fight rephrased over fifty times during the course of this short read. I also didn't leave with any profound knowledge I hadn't already heard elsewhere on an entirely deeper level. Apart from being mildly interesting during the opening chapters, the drivel that fills the remainder of the book just isn't worth it. If you know the slightest bit about neuroplasticity or what the human mind is capable of, spare yourself the agony and skip this book.

Colombo Let me start with the fact that Debbie Hampton is a terrific writer. This is true in two important ways: First, her writing style is graceful and entertaining and never imposes itself on the reader. Said differently, she's just a pleasure to read. The other way in which she's a terrific writer, though, is even more important: She's a bona fide expert who's methodically worked her way through the maze of depression and come out the other side with valuable information. These two qualities combine to make this book a genuine "must read" for anyone wrestling with the twin adversaries of depression and anxiety. Debbie reveals everything she's learned about how the brain works and how that knowledge can be used to deliberately change how you think, how you see the world, and how you react to it. It's very difficult for people with depression to convey to people who aren't depressed how bleak and hopeless the world can look from inside the maze. Debbie not only understands that but she also reassures her readers that there's a way out if they understand the nature of the journey and stick with it. And she provides hope that's based on science, not faith or mere hope (though her message is wildly hopeful). Here's the bottom line: Your brain can change, you can change it, and you can do so methodically and deliberately. The world of depression can be a forlorn place, indeed. Debbie Hampton is a great guide and friend who can, I promise, turn the journey into an adventure. If you are plagued with depression or anxiety, please forgive the pun when I tell you that buying this book is a no-brainer.
