Eloisa James returns with another fabulous romance in her New York Times bestselling Desperate Duchesses series!

As a young girl, Emilia Gwendolyn Carrington told the annoying future Duke of Pindar that she would marry any man in the world before him—so years later she is horrified to realize that she has nowhere else to turn.

Evander Septimus Brody has his own reasons for agreeing to Mia's audacious proposal, but there's one thing he won't give his inconvenient wife: himself.

Instead, he offers Mia a devil's bargain . . . he will spend four nights a year with her. Four nights, and nothing more. And those only when she begs for them.

Which Mia will never do.

Now Vander faces the most crucial challenge of his life: he must seduce his own wife in order to win her heart—and no matter what it takes, this is the one battle he can't afford to lose.

Four Nights with the Duke (Desperate Duchesses), by Eloisa James

Review “another brilliantly executed historical romance that splendidly showcases her flair for faultless plotting and flawless character development. Much of the novel’s sparkling wit is associated with the heroine’s secret life as a best-selling romance novelist” (Booklist (starred review))“James proves that wit is sexy and romance is smart. Her latest Desperate Duchesses novel does it again with an unforgetable heroine, a masterful hero and a very wise little boy. This is a wonderful story filled with emotion. A real keeper.” (RT Book Reviews (top pick))

By HannahPilar I read this as an ARC but loved it and Pre-Ordered it when I finished it.The Desperate Duchesses book eight, Four Nights with the Duke by Eloisa James. I love Eloisa James; she is an eloquent and beautiful writer who tells an intelligent and witty story all the while steaming up your glasses. It was a fun read without anything overly dramatic and devastating happening to the H/h.Mia is a great curvy heroine, she is a published author with a devoted following the only problem is that she must marry in order to keep her nephew, Charles, out of the wicked clutches of Charles’ uncle from his Mother’s side of the family. She had a fiancé but he jilted her and now she chooses to do something drastic. Vander has always said he would marry for love because of his childhood experience with his parents; that is until Mia appears back in his life. Mia’s father and Vander’s mother had an illicit affair in plain view of everyone. Vander hated his mother and Mia’s father for it. Mia accepted it because she knew they were in love. Mia in her youth was in love with Vander but one poorly written poem that fell in to the hands of Vander and Mia was embarrassed and vowed never to love Vander again; that all changes when Mia blackmails him into marriage.Mia wrote it all out what she expects of Vander and why she is doing what she is, but Vander still assuming she is in love with him and is blackmailing him because that’s the only way she can get him to marry him writes out stipulations of his own, without reading hers, only giving her four nights a year in his bed. Vander is shocked to find out that she only wanted to be married to him for six months and then get it annulled. Vander disagrees simply stating marriage is forever, he quickly takes his new charge and treats the boy with the clubbed foot like a normal little boy. Vander also takes the news that Mia is a famous author like it’s no big deal. He also deals with the wicked Uncle who just wanted Charlie for his inheritance. Vander also decides that he will make Mia fall in love with him even though Mia is determined not to.I loved this book, Vander and Mia are great characters and I love the added in notations from Mia on her WIP it almost coincides perfectly with her and Vander’s story. It can be read as a standalone but is a much better experience if you have read the whole series, or at least the last book Three Weeks with Lady X.

With Issues of Course By Judge Tabor One thing Eloisa James has down is the development of the sexy alpha male and their varying colorful characters. We have one such male as the headliner in this story - Evander Septimus Brody, Duke of Pendar. He's what I would refer to as the "disillusioned duke" - mostly because of his antecedents - his father was truly mad and his mother lived with a man who was not her husband for many years. In fact, she lived with our heroine, Mia's father - the two of them spending years scandalizing Polite Society - finally dying together in bed - due to a an accident regarding a chimney flue.Because of his familial background, Vander doesn't care to go about in Society, choosing instead to enjoy his stable of horses. In fact, he spent many nights in the stable when Mia's father was living with his mother - choosing to not be in the same house as the man who "turned his mother into a whore." Vander and Mia have some history as well. It seems she was in love with Vander when she was growing up to the point she wrote him a poem, which her father thought would be cute to show Vander's mother, who thought it would be sweet to pass along to the 15 year old Vander, which Vander couldn't resist sharing with his bud, Thorn Dautry (who by the way, you'll recognize from Three Weeks With Lady X (Desperate Duchesses Book 7). At some point, the juvenile Vander and Thorn were discussing and making fun of the poem in the family library where the 15 year old Mia was hiding and the proverbially fat was tossed into the fire. Mia's self-esteem, which was always precarious due to her voluptuous figure is nearly destroyed, causing her to turn her anger on the boys, declaring she would "never marry either of them."Mia swore off love with the exception that she began to write and eventually became a highly successful author of torrid romance novels. Fifteen years later, Mia finds she is desperately (hence the title "Desperate Duchesses, I suppose) in need of a husband and decides to blackmail Vander into marrying her. Her reasons are honorable, but Vander, who when Mia confronts him with her "demand" proposal, is one angry hulking sexy male and makes the mistake of burning the dang "explanation" note without reading it - in which Mia had further explained her intentions. Vander decides that yes, he will marry Mia, but he will be the one to set the rules. He has some stipulations of his own and writes out his own marriage agreement (demands). Wrongly believing Mia's still hey-go-mad for him, Vander's note states he will only give her four nights in bed each year. Here's where you may as well laugh long and hard, because Vander's "moonbeam" (you'll get his part after you read the book) is mostly stiff and hard all the time for his dumpy little wife. The dumpy part is somewhat tenuous. I was never sure if Mia was dumpy or not. Yes, she dressed dumpy, mostly due to her damaged self-esteem, but although Vander was downright cruel when he described Mia's assets to her face - which contributed to further self-esteem issues - he was crazy in lust with her. If the story had a downside, it would be the crude manner in which Vander dealt with Mia during much of the book. His descriptions of Mia to her face contributed to this reader imagining this little short fat, squat Mia. Yes, he was angry. Yes, she was blackmailing him, but if she was so unattractive, why in the world was his moonbeam always in the condition it was in? He was angry, but could not keep his hands to himself. Plus, the roughness in which he handled Mia was very confusing to Mia and caused further relational problems. But then, Vander was a rough man in many ways - not your regular gentlemanly duke. No - a bad boy duke who didn't give much of a rip about people with the exception of a very select group. We have some absolutely marvelous minor characters which play very well into the overall storyline. Although the Duke of Villiers, Thorn and India make some brief appearances, their initial reactions to Mia are a bit cold, mostly because they don't appreciate the blackmailing of their friend. But, Vander's Uncle Cuffy and Mia's nephew, Charlie, help turn the storyline into a lovely unraveling which reveals the sturdy foundation for a very beautiful family relationship. Once Vander and Charlie hook up, Vander's character stores up so much good will in the reader's heart, one is inclined to forgive our bad boy duke for any previous missteps as well as any future ones because he's just almost too good to be true and everything he should be to Charlie. Yes, Charlie has needed a man in his life and Vander. Is. The Man. Believe me, there's never a doubt about Vander's manliness. He's a standout, crude behavior and all.

By lark Picture a 15-year-old girl, Mia, who has developed early, having her bosom referred to as cabbages by a rotten boy to a group of other boys. Then, having her private poem about her young love read aloud and snickered at by the rotter. And her 15-year-old love, Vander, was in the crowd and had his own insecurities. They both suffer from the scandal of their parents' decades long adulterous affair. This all had the effect of Mia retiring from society and wearing ruffles up to her neck, while Vander scorned society, generally ignored the social graces, and made his life with his horses and a tiny group of friends. His childhood had really done a number on him. This is a complex story with complex characters. I think this is one of the best thought-out stories I've read. Every event happened at just the right time. The secondary characters were delightful ~ I loved Chuffy and little Charlie. We were also briefly visited by the Duke of Villiers and we had a couple of visits with India and Thorn from Three Weeks With Lady X (Desperate Duchesses Book 7). And, of course, we're treated to wit and humor throughout.I thought it hilarious that Vander, arrogant alpha male, refused to read Mia's explanatory letter, thus missing her reason for her actions, and he had to scrabble to figure it out. Talk about frustration! and a blow to his manly pride. lolWe saw what a good man Vander truly was in his kind, sensitive dealings with young Charlie and his generous treatment of Chuffy, his uncle. At the same time, we saw Mia as a prominent author whose notes and re-writes began each chapter. These ended, by the way, at exactly the right time...just as serious tension was developing. Again, perfect timing. Too, the pacing was perfect ~ nary a draggy moment.I've seen criticisms of the sex scenes being gratuitous. I absolutely disagree. They were integral to the plot, in my opinion. Also the coarse language. There was little of it, but it was there, and that usually makes me stop reading. It was essential when used here, though. We're not talking about a polished nobleman, we're dealing with a man who has lived away from the social scene and has a very hard time expressing his emotions.Grand book, well worth the wait! The grand finale was to die for ~sigh~. I can wholeheartedly recommend this extremely well-written novel. I'm looking forward to the next in this series. I bemoan the wait, but I'd rather see it done right than in a hurry.Enjoy your reading! :)
