The series started so wonderfully with the team of Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord. It has maintained a pretty high quality run up until the recent two year series by Brian Wood which many fans (myself included) found to be lacking in both the writer's and artist's portrayal of Robert E Howard's barbarian. So how does the new team do ? The writing by new writer Fred Van Lente is quite good but suffers a little from a slow start where Conan seems to wandering around for awhile and numbing himself with alcohol from the loss of Belit. By the third issue (this was originally published as six comics ) the main plot was starting to really come to together and from then on I greatly enjoyed the book. This is the point in the story when Conan takes a position as Captain of the guards. I really enjoyed Fred's run on Marvel's Hercules and expect even greater things for him in the future as he settles into the book.Brian Ching was announced as the regular artist but unfortunately was able to complete only the first half of the book, but will return in future volumes. Brian Ching is a Californian artist who has been making a name for himself on Dark Horse's Star Wars books. I found the art initially to be a bit too cartoony for my taste. His depiction of Conan is a little too much like that of during Brian Wood's run where he looked like a scrawny "emo " teen. While not quite that bad I would like to see him a little more muscular.By the third issue either Brian's art improved or I just started to enjoy his style a lot more I am not sure which. But I saw John Buscema like characteristics to Brian's art start to emerge. Then he was gone.Replacing him for the second half of the book is Brazilian artist Eduardo Francisco. Mr Francisco reminds me a little of Mike Deodota , but not quite as polished. The styles are similar so it isn't too jarring. The colors by Michael Atiyeh are excellent and helps unify the art.So bottom line is the book been restored to the level of greatness it once held in my heart ? Well to be honest, no. But I think it is well on the road to recovery and I expect bigger and better things in the future. I encourage you to sample this volume.

I actually liked Wood's first arc and his last arc but everything in between I wasn't into and it was pushing me away from the book a bit. This book feels more like a return to the later Truman stuff when he was still on the main Conan title. I wasn't crazy about the creature in this book but the fact that it was merely a fragment left behind by Howard meant there had to be even more interpretation than on the fully completed stories. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book but I certainly have nothing bad to say about it, just sort of a run of the mill Conan story to me. A transition from the Belit stories and set up for what's to come.

His bout of melancholy takes him down a path of non-stop action that all begins with Conan attempting to drink away his sorrow. His path takes him from drunken sorrow, getting robbed and left in a gutter, and eventually having our hero becoming captain of a royal guard. But it isn't all luxury for Conan, there is a hidden enemy who plans and schemes to overthrow the crown and Conan stands in the way. The action is fast furious and always ends with Conan facing it down with sword in hand and a curse on his lips. This is an adventure well worth the cost of admission and no Conan fan will want to miss it.
