A World Without Water, by Christopher Holley

About the Author New Yorker, Christopher Holley, has been an elementary school educator for over 12 years. Through working closely with children he has developed and refined his voice, drawing inspiration from greats like Roald Dahl, David A. Adler and Jeff Kinney. In his children's stories, Christopher tackles tough issues like water conservation, body image and acceptance. However, he has a whimsical side as well, telling tales of students being put in charge of their school, a fairy that grants moustaches and choosing super-duper super powers. Moving forwards, Christopher's goals are to continue working closely with children as an educator, and to author many more fantastic, kid-friendly stories. On a personal basis, Christopher is engaged and he simply loves dogs! In his spare time, he enjoys the Martial Arts, football and strategy games.

He creates stories that are unique, funny, entertaining and yet carry subtle messages about interactions between children and values important to their growth along with environmental concerns – all the while entertaining adult readers with clever plays on words. He is a delight to read and in this book he uses rhyming verse that makes the book sing. Of course no truly fine children’s book would attract youngsters without fine illustrations and fortunately for us Christopher has partnered with illustrator Frank Cassuto for this book and the result is a near perfect feat of accomplishment. In this extended story about the importance of water Christopher relates his concerns and those of his little characters in excellent rhyming verse. Every aspect of water is discussed – from the necessities of keeping gardens alive to fighting fires to swimming (or not!) to water pistols to animals and pets. But the people with the reminders on how to conserve water are the children of the story who share tips for water conservation such as limiting the amount of water used when brushing teeth, shorter showers, better dishwashing techniques, preventing the throwing of garbage in the lake and the importance of preserving water for our crops. The story ends with encouraging everyone to share the importance of water conservation to everyone in the world.Beautifully written and illustrated this is a top-notch book and makes us eager to read all of Christopher Holley’s books, Highly Recommended. Great! A boy wakes up in bed presumably after having a nightmare about there being no water.Font changes on line "Think about the lifeguards and courageous firemen" and then returns to original. Not sure if this is intentional or not! This following line doesn't quite make sense:"No water means no people and we'd the ones to blame!"UPDATE April 22nd, 2016 - The above error has been fixed by the author. (See comment.)Rather depressing but allows kids to see the reality and consequences of wasting water. Thankfully the book suggests practical ways for even kids to save water. The illustrations are dark to go with the dark theme with only the last page brightening up. This makes reading it in black and white a little more of a challenge but it is still readable. SO if you want to get the water message across to your kids then this is a good book to share with them. However it is unlikely a book that they will pick up and read over and over again for sheer enjoyment, hence 4 stars. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Sanders As an early educator, I am always on the lookout for children's books that are engaging and educational; but as a mother and children's author as well, I've learned that these types of books are not always easy to find. I applaud this author for taking an important global topic and breaking it down into a short, entertaining story that children of all ages can understand and relate to.Many in the children's book industry claim that rhyming books are taboo and only authors such as Dr. Seuss can successfully publish them. In my nearly twenty of years of teaching little ones, I can attest that this is simply not true. Children adore rhyming books and remember them much easier than those without rhymes. This author has eloquently proven this untrue as well. His rhymes are fun and engaging--everything a children's story should be.With its powerful message, colorful illustrations, and fluid writing, this book should be on the shelf of every parent or caregiver of young children.
