Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim is a legendary figure, whose life and career were deeply influential in Finnish and European history. He is viewed by many as the father of modern Finland after leading the 'White' faction to victory and independence in the Finnish Civil War of 1918. That conflict preceded a sequence of bitter clashes between Finland, Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany in the buildup to, and during, World War II: The Winter War in 1940, the Continuation War and the Lapland War in 1944-45. Throughout these fierce clashes in the ice and snow, Mannerheim managed his forces with great skill, even though the initiative was to swing back and forth between the adversaries. This study provides a fascinating insight into Mannerheim's career, analysing his traits, his biggest victories and his key enemies. Complete with uniform artwork and detailed tactical maps, it is a comprehensive guide to one of history's most capable military leaders and statesmen.

Very good summary By Charles van Buren Arguably the greatest Scandinavian statesman since Gustaf Vasa, Marshal Mannerheim was more than a military commander. This book examines that part of his career to some extent, touching on the tightrope that he aided Finland in walking between Nazi Germany and Communist Russia. However, the focus of the book is Mannerheim the military commander. At one point near the end, the author categorizes this book as a short overview. As such it contains little that will be new to those who have studied Mannerheim and Finland's twentieth century wars with the Russians. There is some interesting information about the Lapland War which is scarcely touched upon in most English language books. There is also a brief account of the commanders who opposed Mannerheim in various wars and battles. All in all, this is a fine introductory work to the life of the Marshal and to the six wars in which he served. Just how good was Mannerheim as a military commander? This book provides no real evaluation, but it is hard to argue with success. The book does make it clear that he was a great leader. For those who want to know more, there is a short bibliography at the end. Of the works available in English J.E.O. Screen's work is outstanding. Unfortunately there are only two volumes. The rest has not been translated into English. Another good biography in English is MANNERHEIM: PRESIDENT, SOLDIER, SPY by Jonathan Clements. Of course there is also THE MEMOIRS OF MARSHAL MANNERHEIM, but these were written in part by Mannerheim's friends and associates. They are also a calculated effort on the part of Mannerheim and associates to contribute to Finland's welfare and independence, rather than being a strict history or autobiography. Some would say that most of Mannerheim's life after returning to Finland in 1917 was a calculated effort to be what he believed Finland needed. This review is from the Kindle e-book edition.

This volume outlines the career of Finland’s famous soldier-statesmen who played a key role in keeping his country from being crushed by the Soviet Union. Mannerheim’s career is perfect for the constrained size of the Command series and this volume proves to be interesting and highly readable. The well-written narrative is complemented by excellent photographs, three color battle scenes and six maps. Overall, an excellent short history of Mannerheim’s military-political career. As the author points out, Mannerheim fought in six wars during his career and was involved in a 2-year long intelligence gathering mission in central Asia – a quite full resume! The greatest weakness of the Command series is the 64-page limit, which forces authors to make difficult choices about what to keep and what to omit. In this case, I was left wondering about Mannerheim’s military education, which seemed limited to only cavalry officer courses. If true, this lack of any kind of general staff training would explain his inability to delegate later during the Winter War. In addition, there is a bare minimum of non-military biographic detail, which means that readers will learn little about Mannerheim’s family, religious beliefs or other aspects of his life that help to explain his character. Even in terms of pure military ability, it’s difficult to pin down how good Mannerheim was as a commander; no doubt he was prudent and thoughtful, but there is little effort to assess his ability as a military leader. On the other hand, it is clear that Mannerheim had an excellent sense of timing and knew when to commit his limited reserves. After finishing the volume, I felt better informed about Mannerheim’s career but still uncertain about Mannerheim the soldier. I did find certain aspects of Mannerheim’s character a bit tedious; he was a great Finnish patriot (who did not actually speak Finnish very well) and a man capable of turning down offers of absolute power, but he helped steer Finland toward a very muddled relationship with the Third Reich. Apparently it never occurred to Mannerheim, as it did to Spain and Sweden, to remain neutral, sell minerals to Hitler and offer him volunteers to fight in German units.

Isby Osprey’s command biography series are shorter than most of their other series. I tend to think of them as primarily intended as “briefs” for someone taking the role of that commander in a wargame or exercise, especially in the case of the major names where there exists extensive biographic, analytic or memoir literature that would take an extensive effort to digest and use whether as a gamer or understanding the events in which the commander took part. This monograph in the series is of a commander that, while still having a high degree of name-recognition in the English-speaking world, is perhaps more suited to the series’ monographic treatment. The author does not limit the scope to wartime generalship and national leadership including his role as an Axis coalition partner (belatedly, he realized, as did Franco, that he that sups with the devil really does need a very long spoon indeed). An ethnic Swede that became the national hero of Finland, he started out as a Tsarist cavalry officer and a player in the “Great Game” in central Asia. The Finns publish a lot of books on their military history (I think the Finnish Air Force has the highest ratio of books written to airplanes operated of any combatant). While the list of sources does not include any Finnish-language published works, it does not prevent this monograph from presenting its “brief” for cogent and well focused description of Mannerheim’s long and varied life as a leader.
