The great escape of the African slaves out of bondage in the South in the 1850s and 1860s is told through the dramatic and danger-filled story of one young man, Tice, and his escape to Canada on the Underground Railroad. The 19-year-old, God-fearing Tice runs from his master's plantation in Maysville, Kentucky, and swims the Ohio River to Ripley, Ohio, where he is connected to a network of people who rush him northeastward, ever northeastward - finally through Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine toward New Brunswick, Canada. Always pursued by the ruthless Morgan, his master's foreman. Acting against the law, individuals and families (many based on real-life heroes) put their lives and fortunes at risk to help Tice, who they find likeable, friendly and even funny despite his life of misery. Near the end of Tice's journey, one teenage boy in an Underground Railroad family becomes particularly close to him and another escaping slave who has renamed himself "Freeborn." This boy, Caleb Chadwick, is instrumental in the penultimate leg in Tice and Freeborn's escape when he takes them via horse-drawn wagon from Vassalboro to Bangor, Maine. "True North: Tice's Story" is a prequel to "The Last Aliyah." In this story, descendants of Tice and the Chadwicks are part of modern-day Underground Railroad helping Jews escape America, which has signed on to a United Nations ban of Jewish emigration to Israel.

First, of all, it was an easy read, qualifying the book not only for adults, but for young adults, and perhaps even younger. Second, Mark Leslie recreates a world very far from and unfamiliar to my own – that of a black slave and his desperate gamble on a journey to freedom. Third, living in Nova Scotia in an area that served as one of the terminuses of the Underground Railroad – a Black Cultural Center housing historical archives relating to it being nearby – and knowing descendants of some of those slaves, I found it educational and relevant.Mark Leslie also introduces the reader to characters that are very well delineated in concise ways. He uses their alliances (e.g. Quakers; families) and devout Christian faith to show how the networks formed and managed to stay together under the pressure of legal and social attacks. He introduces historical characters, I thought, both to educate the reader (for example, I did not know that Thoreau participated in the railroad) and to demonstrate that not all those transporting slaves were unknown. Most of all, I found the story heartwarming. In this time in history, when the heroic seems to be swamped by the cynical, it is good to be reminded of a time when everyday men and women risked everything for a stranger.I recommend the book to all ages, especially to adults who wish to tell their children about a time when men and women cared enough to lay down their lives for complete strangers who came from another culture and belonged to another race, to help them find safety and freedom from bondage. Further, far from the histrionics of the social networks of today, they wished to do it anonymously.

By Sue “True North Tice’s Story”Mark Leslie has brought a rich and compelling story to his readers in a surprisingly compact little book. The fictional Tice was a slave who ultimately is helped to Canada that, by American Civil War time, had been a slave free nation for decades. The Underground Railroad is manned herein by fascinating people. The story reminds one of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and “Pilgrim’s Progress,” in that the story line is embellished with religious references. The story and the references are well-told and nicely connected. Numerous characters are introduced and neatly ‘fleshed out’ with superior dialectical language. Readers get a quick introduction to mostly fictional ‘people’ along with appropriate moments with Thoreau and Hannibal Hamlin.Mark Leslie sneaks his reader into the lives of ‘good guys’ and ‘bad’ with remarkable ease. It’s a fast read that will stay with the reader far past the last sentences. I recommend this on a number of levels. Enjoy it and hope for more from Mr. Leslie.D. Shaub Maine

By Lauri Hanson I love history, and Mark Leslie makes history come alive in True North, Tice's Story. True North is well written and very interesting. In this account, Mark shows the difficulties, heartaches, and sacrifices of both slaves and those who helped them along the Underground Railroad.
