About the Author Simon Read is an award-winning former newspaper reporter and the author of seven previous works of narrative non-fiction published on both sides of the Atlantic, including War of Words, The Case That Foiled Fabian, and Human Game. Dettman Winston Churchill, like many famous and accomplished men, was an individual of great and lingering contradictions, most long-standing and impregnable. They took root in his early youth and remained steadfast and unshakable to the very end. These contradictions were often clashes between his Victorian upbringing -- which stressed unflinching devotion to King and Country -- and a keen and roving intellect which often rallied against ignorance and dogmatic assertions which flew in the face of a burgeoning modern world. These conflicts were greatly in evidence when as a young man he acted both as a soldier and war correspondent in a succession of military escapades which are masterfully detailed in Simon Read’s brilliant new work WINSTON CHURCHILL REPORTING. While on the one hand the young Winston craved the adventure and romanticism which he associated with the military life and volunteered over and over again for duty in such foreign and dangerous hotspots as Cuba, India, Egypt and South Africa, the latter during the Second Boer War, there was also a pragmatic sidebar to his interest in these dangerous tours of duty, namely advertising his name and exploits before the public so as to further his long-range goal of entering politics. Nonetheless, his experiences in some of the worst military clashes of the era – the Boer War was a particularly brutal and bloody affair – forged in him a certain duplicity about war, carnage and heroism that would remain with him his entire life and very much color his future decision- making.Read’s book vibrantly and with heart thumping panache chronicles Churchill’s various tours of duty in these remote and dangerous locales. The author’s vivid and unflinching descriptions of these campaigns is a major factor in making this book a must read but his understanding and grasp of what made the embryonic Churchill tick is equally as significant and important to the totality of this superior work.Couldn’t recommend it higher.

This is a book perfect for any lover of Churchill or just history By Christopher Brochon This is a book perfect for any lover of Churchill or just history. Simon Read's depth of research clearly comes through in his writing and this book reads with the fury of an Indiana Jones film. A must for the bookshelf of any Churchill collector.
