About the Author Walter Lippmann (September 23, 1889 - December 14, 1974) was an influential American award-winning writer, journalist, and political commentator. Lippmann was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1958 and 1962 for his syndicated newspaper column, "Today and Tomorrow."

The rise of progressivism and fascism, and the death of traditional liberalism By Clearpoint First things first --- Walter Lippmann is a tremendous writer. His gift to us in this book is an attention-grabbing narrative of a time of great change in America and the western world, when the philosophy of traditional liberalism on which our country was founded and predominantly governed under since the American Revolution, was found wanting and effectively cast aside, in whole or in part, and replaced by a politically compromised and collectivist blend of the ideological and intellectually-created "ism's" which emerged from the minds of ivory tower thinkers throughout the western world --- socialism, marxism, syndicalism (Lippmann's favorite), progressivism, and collectivism's newest mutations, communism and fascism.To understand the mindset of today's leaders of the free world, all one need do is read Lippmann, for they are all his ideological children. Lippmann viewed government as society's most important institution, and the mythical superman that he called the "statesman" as the natural leader of government, and thereby society. His problem with traditional liberalism? A strictly interpreted Constitution that effectively limited and mechanized the power of government, and which attracted a mob of what Lippmann calls "routineers" to its ranks instead of the "statesmen" government so needed to lead us. His problem with socialism and marxism? The same as with traditional liberalism --- too limited and mechanical of purpose, and therefore too many routineers.And democracy? Lippmann appears to have a love / hate relationship with it. Politically, the more the better, for the herd could be easily manipulated and controlled through the election process of limited choices. Economically, the Austrian thought of consumers effectively controlling the marketplace through their purchasing power frightened him, and the syndicalist system of planned production guided by a guild of enlightened producers (kind of like economc "statesmen") appealed to him.Finally, to give great credit where credit is due, Lippmann points out the exaggerated importance of historical landmarks compared to all other periods of time, when measured over the vast expanse of time, there may be in fact little if any difference in relative importance. He mocks the period of the American Revolution and the creation of the strictly limited U.S. Constitution in this manner. Lippmann believes that the U.S. Constitution was appropriate for their time, but no longer serves a purpose in his. To him, the centralization of governmental power is both good and necessary, whereas the founding fathers believed that the results of centralized governmental power (like that of the govt of King George), when measured over the vast expanse of history, have consistently led to death, destruction, misery, and great losses of individual freedom. One can only conclude that Lippmann, believed that his time was different than all others. And I can't help but think that it's truly a shame that he didn't eat his own cooking.Reading Lippmann will give you great insight into the mindset of today's political "statesmen" --- Obama, the Clintons', the Bushs', McCain, Gingrich, Pelosi and all the rest of that small political world holding court in Washington DC.
