By diane gross This beautifully prepared three volume history contains 120 painstakingly prepared replications of oil paintings of Native Americans that were hand painted between 1824 and 1836 by Charles Bird King. They are fantastic. The originals were destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian in 1865 and the ones reproduced here used the original lithographs from "subscription only" First Edition. These alone are worth the price of the three-volume set.I found the books fascinating because it is a true example of contemporaneous history-- i.e. it was written between 1836 and 1844 while the long, sad decline and death of native Americans was happening. In 1838 and 1839, as part of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, the Cherokee nation was forced to give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and to migrate to an area in present-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee people called this journey the "Trail of Tears," because of its devastating effects. The migrants faced hunger, disease, and exhaustion on the forced march. Over 4,000 out of 15,000 of the Cherokees died.It includes an essay on our treatment of Native Americans and provides biographies of scores of important Native Americans from Pocahontas to 1840. The author served as the U.S Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1816 to 1830. He was one of the few to hold this post that genuinely was concerned with their welfare. Considering the times, he had a good and sensitive knowledge of how epidemics of previously unknown disease decimated the Native Americans. These three volumes were completed in 1844 just a year before the term Manifest Destiny was coined in 1845, about 30 years before Custer's Last Stand and about 80 years before it all ended with the Apache wars in 1924. This set is as close to primary research, as any other literature I have read on the subject, making it a highly recommendable work for anyone interested in the times and the history.
