The T-64 tank was the most revolutionary design of the whole Cold War, designed to provide the firepower and armor protection of a heavy tank in a medium-weight design. It pioneered a host of sophisticated new technologies including laminate armor, stereoscopic tank rangefinders, opposed-piston engines, smooth-bore tank guns with discarding sabot ammunition, and gun-fired guided projectiles. These impressive features meant that the Russians were loath to part with the secrets of the design, and the T-64 was the only Soviet tank type of the Cold War that was never exported.
Written by an armor expert, this detailed technical history sheds light on the secrets behind the Cold War's most controversial tank, revealing how its highly advanced technologies proved to be both a blessing and a curse.

Another quality book from Steven Zaloga By TankandAFVNews People familiar with Osprey's New Vanguard series and with Steven Zaloga will know exactly what to expect from this title; a well written, well researched book with quality photos and illustrations. Mr. Zaloga also wrote the New Vanguard series books on the Soviet T-62, T-72 and T-80, so this volume completes the set nicely. That the T-64 is the last of the Soviet Cold War MBT's to get it's own New Vanguard book is indicative of how this vehicle has been overshadowed by its more well known stablemates. Ironically, the T-64 was perhaps the most important of the Cold War Soviet designs, setting the template for all the Soviet tanks that followed. Zaloga does a very nice job in describing the internal politics that led to the development of the T-64, a tale with more than a few characters and plot twists. It is perhaps appropriate that this book came out now, as it's only been in the last year that the T-64 has seen combat, being used extensively in the fighting in Ukraine. If you are looking for something on the T-64, there are not many options out there. Fortunately, this volume fills the niche quite nicely.

A Forczyk As usual, armor expert Steven Zaloga provides a wealth of useful information and analysis in T-64: The Cold War’s Most Secret Tank. Indeed, I wish I had this volume 30 years ago when I was an American tanker and we knew very little about the difference between a T64 and a T-72. In this volume, Mr. Zaloga shows how the Soviet quest for a new, advanced tank in the early 1950s was subverted by interference from Nikita Khrushchev, who endorsed full-scale production of the T-64 prototype before all the bugs were worked out – the Russian Army has been paying the consequences for this mistake for decades. Mr Zaloga assesses that the T-64, which influenced the later T-72 and T-80 tanks, saddled the Soviets with a tank that was simply too small to compete effectively with its Western adversaries. There is little doubt that the small turret, half of which is occupied by the autoloader, is sub-optimal. I’ve been inside the T-72 turret and found it too cramped and believe it would quickly undermine creweffectiveness.Mr. Zaloga also describes the in-fighting between the Soviet tank design bureaus in Kharkov, Nizhniy Tagil and Leningrad, which led to the concurrent development of three different tanks. The T-64 tank itself was a problem child, plagued with engine defects and a variety of other issues. Although the author mentioned problems with the air filters, it is never really clear what was causing T-64 engines to fail so quickly. The T-64’s transmission is not mentioned, but I suspect that this component may also have been problematic. When I went through Foreign Vehicle training at Aberdeen, I was surprised by the T-72’s poor design in terms of operator maintenance; unlike Western military vehicles, simple tasks like checking oil levels were difficult due to the design. Given the T-64’s low operational readiness in the 1970s, I suspect that operator level maintenance was not up to snuff.Overall, the volume is one of the best New Vanguards that I have read in the last year or so and boasts excellent graphical quality and information. An excellent volume.

Isby A new Zaloga book on Soviet/Russian AFVs is always a good thing, and this monograph is no exception. It represents a highly informed distillation of all that is known (that still includes a lot of mis-information and the writings of “Viktor Suvorov”) about this tank since it first emerged from the Cold War mists in the late 1960s.The extensive Russian-language sources – including technical manuals -- make heavy use of memoir literature from the former Soviet military-industrial complex. Collated together, these provide something that the West could only guess at back in the Cold War, how the T-64 emerged, was used, and how it worked. It also presents a guide to how Russia tried to meet the challenge of adopting the new (but pre-microchip revolution) technologies of the latter Cold War to a main battle tank program that had been seen worldwide as an example of consistent incremental development (though we now know the true story was much more complex). The T-64 is still a combat system in the conflicts around Ukraine’s peripheries. The Armata, the first post-Soviet tank design, is still a long way from operationally effective. This monograph has value for understanding today’s real or potential conflicts as well as the balance of forces that loomed so large in the Cold War.
