The atoms first approach provides a consistent and logical method for teaching general chemistry. This approach starts with the fundamental building block of matter, the atom, and uses it as the stepping stone to understanding more complex chemistry topics. Once mastery of the nature of atoms and electrons is achieved, the formation and properties of compounds are developed. Only after the study of matter and the atom will students have sufficient background to fully engage in topics such as stoichiometry, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics. Thus, the Atoms First method empowers instructors to present the most complete and compelling story of general chemistry. Far from a simple re-ordering of topics, this is a book that will truly meet the needs of the growing atoms-first market.

About the Author Dr. Julia Burdge did most of her undergraduate work at Iowa State University, completing her bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in inorganic chemistry at the University of South Florida in Tampa. She earned her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at the University of Idaho. Her Master’s and doctoral research involved the development of chemotherapeutic analogs of cisplatin and the development of instruments and methods for measuring ultra-trace concentrations of atmospheric sulfur compounds. Over the past 20 years, she has taught introductory and advanced courses in every division of the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, as well as interdisciplinary courses. She also developed and taught a new introductory chemistry course for pre-service science teachers, and initiated and served as a mentor in a future faculty development program for graduate students and post-doctoral associates. She is currently affiliated with the University of Idaho.

Excellent Chemistry Textbook By bendies14 I bought this book as the textbook for my first chemistry class in college (I'm a chemistry major, so it's the first of many). I had taken chemistry in high school, but that had been two years earlier. This book was just the right step up from my high school class, but I think that it would also be easy to understand for someone who has not taken the subject before. It's well laid out and explains topics well before moving on. One feature that I really appreciate is that when it brings up a topic that hasn't been discussed for awhile, it gives the chapter and section so that you can look it up again. Overall, I think that Atoms First is an excellent textbook for students who are new or fairly new to the field of chemistry.

I’m disgusted that the chemistry department at GW decided to use this book for General Chemistry. Why was it so bad? It’s simple—it was foully written. The people who wrote it clearly never studied English, grammar, and basic expository writing as intensively as they studied chemistry. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they passed high school English. I’m a pretty smart guy who’s fluent in Calculus & can understand complex works by T.S. Elliot and Nathaniel Hawthrone, but the fact that I had to reread each paragraph 5 or more times before understanding whatever the heck they were talking about really speaks to how badly it was written. The authors rarely use active voice, and each noun has three adjectives to describe making each 200 word sentence unbearable to comprehend. There are some paragraphs in the book that take up a third of the page that are only 2 sentences long! The excessive wordiness just made everything really hard to understand. I ended up getting A’s in Gen Chem I & II because I made daily outlines of the reading, memorized those, and took the tests. I was relieved that my professor tested me more on the quantitative side, and less on the conceptual garbage in this book. I’m writing to admonish you from buying this book! If you are a professor considering about institutionalizing this book as the primary textbook for a college chemistry class, then you’ll not get tenure for sure.
