Review By the title alone you know you will like this book and I am pleased to say it does not disappoint once you get inside. This one is a cracker from first to last. The book opens with a really useful explanation of the set-up of aircraft procurement and testing under the Nazis. It became something of a labyrinth as empires were built and expanded upon by power hungry men. The author details the many test sites where development took place and it helps to illustrate the huge amount of effort that went into the growth of German air power. The author draws our attention to the fact that while it could do next to nothing about the manufacturing power of it's enemies the Luftwaffe made the huge mistake of developing too many types while not sticking to the manufacture of successful models. This is another of those dip in and out books I really enjoy. I will always like more snaps, but those we get are fascinating and the info is all good stuff. - War History Online "X-planes" is a fascinating look at an amazing chapter in aviation history. -Toy Soldier & model figure

A Trove of Information By Dipaoj This book provides a wealth of information - some of it obscure - about German aviation development prior to and through WW II. It begins with an overview and history of Germany's aircraft research and development process and the organization of test centers and test detachments and squadrons. After these opening chapters, Griehl hits his stride with an alphabetical manufacturer-by-manufacturer listing of prototypes. Within each of these sub-chapters, he provides a brief description of each prototype (or mock-up), generally accompanied by a photo, and a listing of each version, including markings, production number, first flight date, ultimate fate and other remarks. It is this trove of detail and the encyclopedic organization and structure that elevates "X-Planes: German Luftwaffe Prototypes 1930-1945" above Griehl's 2004 book, "Luftwaffe X-Planes: German Experimental and Prototype Planes of World War II." However, that earlier, slimmer and less-well-organized volume contains information not found in this book (e.g., an additional photo and paragraph on the Bachem Natter and a photo and description of the mock-up of the FW "Flitzer"). Consequently, the two books complement each other to some extent, rather than the latter replacing the former.

By Alte Adler The Editorial Revue fails to mention that the book consists of mostly unpublished photos of early prototypes, and mock ups. It then describes a very short history of the aircraft type pictured. If you've any interest in the WWII Luftwaffe don't miss this book.
