America is in the midst of a daily debate about the issue of undocumented workers. It seems that every day there is another controversy about immigration in the news. Most Americans read these articles and look upon the undocumented immigrants as an undifferentiated block of people. Few seem to truly understand them as individuals, how they got here and their personal stories. This non-fiction book, Voices of the Undocumented, tells the stories of nine undocumented individuals, their struggles as day workers, how their lives are in limbo and their hopes for a better future. This is not a political book. The purpose of these life stories is to give these faceless people a voice. From the heartbreaking story of Salvador (an illiterate Mexican farm worker who entered the U.S. illegally four times), to Ernesto (an educated Peruvian womanizer), to the amazing accomplishments of Rocío (a graduate of a prestigious university), Voices of the Undocumented relates poignant accounts of the undocumented workers' lives. One must know the stories to truly know the people.

The stories of the people you drive by everyday By Steven Asch Lending voice to the voiceless is a time honored tradition in journalism, literature and oral history. This is a wonderful work is a bit of all three. In a twitter world, the chapters do not shy away from the depth that brings humanity to the day workers' lives and stories. Next time you drive by a group of Latinos looking for work on a corner or in front of a Walmart, this is what they would say to you if they could.

In our daily media doses, we hear the voices of our politicians and their constituents blaming immigrants for a myriad of our societal woes. It is therefore refreshing to hear from the immigrants themselves and, particularly, the lowest class of immigrants, those who are undocumented. Their words are not fine prose, rather they are the words of the illiterate, often in their native tongues, not to mention English. It should be no surprise to any reader that these folks share the hopes, dreams and frustrations of every foreigner who has ever landed on our shore. They come here for a variety of reasons, ranging from seeking asylum to simply wanting to better themselves. Here, they experience a complex mixture of expectations and misconceptions. Enduring loss of family and culture, they persist using initiative and determination in the face of the frustrations of a broken system of immigration. From their own testimonies, we see that they are not here to cause problems or "milk" our systems of welfare; rather they are here striving to better themselves and their families. (Forbes reported for example that, in 2013, immigrants sent more than $100 billion back home to their families.) That persons remain in our country "undocumented" (and often return multiple times) is a testament to their resilience in seeking a better life. Most interesting, is their shared desire to return to their own country when they have achieved some financial success, indicating that their resolve is for betterment, not welfare.Rocio’s story is particularly instructive. A brilliant and dedicated student, her only career ceiling is her undocumented status. The book does not provide answers - rather it asks questions, the queries we don't necessarily want to resolve. The most important question is: do we want to be the nation we have always been, a melting pot for the world where cultures blend and free people can achieve? This book should be required reading for any citizen, politician or not, who believes that the solution to our immigration "problem" is a higher wall.

At every turn, the book contradicted my assumptions about who undocumented workers are, where they come from, why they are in the United States, and how they got to the U.S. And transcending the issue of migration, the book speaks to the more fundamental human issues of love, family, life goals, and self worth. With an unexpected first person narrative style, the authors show that undocumented workers maintain the same set of driving forces and internal contradictions as all human beings, through which we take pride in our accomplishments while belittling our setbacks. Through this innate mechanism of self-survival, Voices of the Undocumented reveals that we are all more similar than different.
