By Stephen Vincent Kempton This hardcover book collects Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming new creator owned comic. Fifteen years earlier the same two creators broke new ground with the award winning series Powers. Can the two catch lighting in a bottle twice is what I set to find out.Bendis started his comic career as a writer and artist of crime fiction and is now returning to it so it seems a very natural fit. I find Bendis to be Marvel's consistently best scripter who rarely disappoints.Omeing conversely does not fair as well in my opinion. It all depends on who is paired with. Of course I loved his Powers work at the time and thought he was Artistic Genius, while other times I find his work to be too stiff and primitive for my liking.I know Bendis , a one time artist himself, spends a lot of thought pairing the correct artist to the correct project. By the end of the volume Oeming had won me over on this project and I could not imagine a different artist. One problem I had , especially early in the volume, was several times I was confused on panel layout in not knowing if the panels flowed across a two page spread or if each page was made to read separately. I found this distracting and could have been fixed with either better page layout or by the colorist using different color palettes on each page so that you knew when the pages were a separate entity.Colorist Taka Soma uses mostly dark monochromatic color schemes. This coupled with Omeing's heavy use of black and black space makes the results look a little too dark for my taste. I would have preferred either more pastels colors or perhaps skipping the coloring entirely and just going black and white for a very noir feel.As for the story itself it is an excellent tale of a parallel reality in which the Crime families have been the dominant way of life. Society in America is controlled by five crime families each with its own territory. The story opens with Valentine Gallo becoming a "made man" and sent on a mission which should have been a cake walk. He was to give a senator a suitcase. It ends up killing the senator and he finds himself in trouble with both the CIA and all the families. His only ally a sexy ginger hit-woman named Jagger Rose. Even Valentine's own mother tells him a dangerous secret which shocks him to his core.Along the way Bendis breaks the Valentine narrative to give us key glimpses into the alternate history in which the Crime Families made a major difference in how things turned out.The books contains the first six issues including a double sized first issue published by Marvel's Icon line in 2014. Also included is the covers and alternate covers plus the Bendis script for the first issue . Plus you get the original sketches and character designs done by both Bendis and Oeming. This is just the start of a rich and powerful epic and the more I read the more I got drawn into this world. I highly recommend this volume.

By Jud The United States of Murder Inc. has largely succeeded with an unusual stylistically graphic design take for this narrative's visual component. The 'minimalist' style of rendering along with the clever use of contrasting colour to evoke the storyline's and panels' 'moods' works well. The narrative itself is solid [but again minimalist] cleverly blending 'fictionalized flashback' sequences of actual historical events to add depth and to explain the reasoning behind the story-line's contemporary events. The only real drawback with the graphic artwork style is that it is sometimes initially confuses the reader to understand the proper sequential order of the panels on the page spreads. But having said this I think it tends to make the reading more interesting- like putting together a 'jigsaw'- mentally placing each 'piece' of action to 'fit' the narrative's correct flow. All in all this work is an ambitious graphic take on the 'criminal noir' graphic novel genre- and anyone who is interested in such would not be disappointed in trying this as its style gradually 'grows' on your imaginative perception of the storyline. Imagine a comic-book variation of Coppolla's screen adaptation of the 'The Godfather' trilogy and you have the idea of what this is mutating into with 'Truth' setting up nicely the next 'installment' [yet to be published]. A nicely bound volume that can be re-read and still be enjoyed!
