More super-baddies than you can shake a stick at By Dan Pace (feral atom) Collects Giant-Size Super-Villain Team-up (SVTU) 1-2, SVTU 1-14, 16-17, Avengers 154-156, and Champions 16. SVTU 15's cover is included and the issue itself was an abbreviated reprint of Astonishing Tales 4-5 and not included in this volume - if you like the Doom stories here, pick up Marvel Rarities #1 Masterworks. Half of the collection is filled with Dr. Doom stories and is also an excellent collection. For the origin of SVTU, Fantastic Four #4 reintroduced the Sub-Mariner to the Marvel universe. FF#5 had Dr. Doom's first appearance. FF#6 had Subby and Doom team-up to take on the Fantastic Four.Roy Thomas, comic historian that he is, takes that premise and has a couple of Giant-Size Super Villain Team-up books in 1975, more than a year before DC ushered in Secret Society of Super-Villains book. Namor and Doom, both regal kings, have always been shown to be two of the most noble villains (when Namor isn't being a hero). This collection is jam-packed with Namor and Doom teaming up, fighting each other, fighting heroes, and fighting a slew of other villains, across 460 pages, with a couple of pages of 1/4 size photostats. The first Giant-Size SVTU has two reprint stories (one from Sub-Mariner #20 where Namor faces off against Doom and one from Marvel Super Heroes where Doom and Diablo face off) surrounded by 10 pages of new John Buscema art.The second Giant-Size has an interesting Roy Thomas story that's hampered by sub-par art from Mike Sekowsky. The Doomsman is back from Astonishing Tales. In #1-3, Attuma, Tiger Shark and Dr Dorcas team-up to take on Doom and Sub-Mariner. Tony Isabella writes the first two issues and Jim Shooter writes the last one. Art for #1 is credited to George Tuska and Bill Everett, but I couldn't find any evidence of Bill Everett. George Evans does the pencils for the second half on the story. #2-3 are penciled by Sal Buscema.#4 is more Namor and Doom, by Bill Mantlo and Herb Trimpe.#5 has the FF guest-starring, by Steve Englehart and Herb Trimpe.#6-7 has the FF and the first appearance and origin of the Shroud. I think the Shroud is intended to be an anti-hero, taking on as his first mission to kill Dr. Doom.#8 has Englehart writing with Keith Giffen and Owen McCarron sharing penciling. The Shroud, Tamara and Namorita guest-star along with the Circus of Crime. This story leads into the Private War of Dr. Doom cross-over with the Avengers (Gerry Conway/George Perez/Sal Buscema). STVU #9 and Avengers 154-156, with Tyrak and Attuma.I've always loved this story, even if they make Tyrak much more powerful than Attuma. Tyrak does make a great adversary in this story. Perez artwork was excellent and Sal turns in some of his best work on #156.SVTU #10-12 has a three-parter with Dr. Doom and the Red Skrull, renewing their rivalry from the Astonishing Tales days. Captain America and the Shroud guest-star. I love seeing Red Skull in a space suit! Written by Bill Mantlo and drawn by Bob Hall and Don Perlin. Namor appears in #11 and a couple pages of #12.#13 has Namor returning with Doom to face Krang. Keith Giffen turns in some Kirbyesque art and is one of the highlight issues in this volume.#14 has Magneto, Doom and the Avengers. The Champions appear on the last page. SVTU production is suspended in 1977 and the story carries over into Champions.Champions #16 has the Hulk, Magneto, Beast and Doom.SVTU 16 and 17 ends the hiatus, with an #16 published in 1979 and #17 published in 1980. This two-parter has Red Skull and Hate-Monger with Arnim Zola. #15, the reprint issue, actually was printed in 1978, spreading the last three issues of the series over nearly three years. With all the creative team revolving door, there is some inconsistency on this title, but it makes up for it in shear awesomeness.Check out Doom on page 148! That's hardcore villainy! Twice Doom uses finger missiles (pg 222 and 378). I love that effect. The half-page drawing of Namor on 289 makes me wish George Perez had done a few issues of Subby's title. Some of these covers are sensational as well, especially the GS SVTU #2 (chosen as the collection cover), SVTU #1, #6, and #10, with that towering Red Skull holding Doom and Cap in his hand as they fight. This is another amazing collection and something I've been looking forward to for a while. Thank you Marvel!
