"Mine might have been a simple, pretty story if not for the wolves. In late July they emerged from the foothills...."

In this gripping memoir of a young man, a wolf, and their parallel lives and ultimate collision, Bryce Andrews describes life on the remote, windswept Sun Ranch in Southwest Montana. The Sun's 20,000 acres of rangeland occupy a still-wild corner of Southwest Montana - a high valley surrounded by mountain ranges and steep creeks with portentous names like Grizzly, Dead Man, and Bad Luck. Just over the border from Yellowstone National Park, the Sun holds giant herds of cattle and elk amid many predators - bears, mountain lions, and wolves. In lyrical, haunting language, Andrews recounts marathon days and nights of building fences, riding, roping, and otherwise learning the hard business of caring for cattle, an initiation that changes him from an idealistic city kid into a skilled ranch hand. But when wolves suddenly begin killing the ranch's cattle, Andrews has to shoulder a rifle, chase the pack, and do what he'd hoped he would never have to do.

Badluck Way is about transformation and complications, about living with dirty hands every day. It is about the hard choices that wake us at night and take a lifetime to reconcile. Above all Badluck Way celebrates the breathtaking beauty of wilderness and the satisfaction of hard work on some of the harshest, most beautiful land in the world. Called "an important meditation on what it means to share space and breathe the same air as truly wild animals" (Tom Groneberg, author of The Secret Life of Cowboys), Badluck Way is the memorable story of one young man's rebirth in the crucible of the West's timeless landscape, a place at the center of the heart's geography, savage and gorgeous in equal measure.

Despite government-overseen reintroduction, despite reimbursement for predation, wolves are hunters and cattle are easy prey. As soon as I read the blurb, I knew this memoir wouldn’t end without blood being spilled. Yet Bryce Andrews’ easy voice and excellent writing drew me, and I was uncontrollably along for the collision when predator and unintended prey met.A first-hand account of life on a modern day cattle ranch, Andrews has a wonderful way with words and a voice that is strong and draws the reader in. His descriptions of the beauty of the ranch and the land in Montana read smoothly and are not bogged down in excessive detail. His concise yet poetic way of “speaking” truly makes this memoir. He can make you laugh with one sentence and have you yearning for the wild mountains of Montana in the next. His words paint a picture before your reading eyes until you feel as if you are standing knee-deep in a Montana winter with snow battering your face and the wind burning your skin. It’s rare an author can capture such a scene without overtelling and dulling the sensation, but Andrew’s succeeds and excels at it.I appreciate the author’s honesty. Nothing is sugar coated, not the description of the wolves’ kills or the daily grind or the grim task of dealing with cows maimed by predators. This is what life on a ranch is truly like. It’s a glimpse into a world and a life that most of us will never know, and Andrews made me both relieved and saddened by that fact as I read.I wasn’t certain I wanted to read this book at first. I love wolves. I followed their reintroduction into Yellowstone and read every book on the subject I could get my hands on. With this being a cattle ranch set in the wilds of the west, I knew there would be wolf encounters, and I had a pretty good idea of how a ranch hand would deal with a wolf; yet Andrews surprised me. He seemed as enchanted with the wolves as I am. In fact, in his first encounter with one, he was too awed to do anything other than watch. In the end, the hardship of trying to co-exist with wolves and the gruesome actions that must be taken to stop predation changed Andrews, but not in the way I was expecting. I think Andrews says it best himself: “The ranch’s two predominant qualities were beauty and brutality.”

While predictable in it's tragedy of the life and death struggle of Nature vs man's unnatural interjections of raising stock ultimately for killing, yet being outraged when another natural predator pulls up at the table is thoroughly fascinating. Humans are the only animal that destroys utterly any possible opponent in the circle of living. A story of Life, beauty and the inner conflicts of what it means to be human living within this conflict. A story very well told. This tale of City boy transmuting into one tough cowboy through the unrelenting work, weather and brutalities of both the Natural world of which humans tend to forget we are a part, when taking the acts of Nature's creatures personally. That he will likely always regret killing that beautiful wolf in my mind is the sign of an intact soul, one who is moved by Nature's directives, even as he errors. Fabulous book!

He learns how tough it really is to be a cowboy in this touching memoir. This is not a fast paced action filled story, but one that shows the tediousness and loneliness of being a ranch hand. We get to see first had how this young man lives each day on the ranch and enjoys nature. He tells about some of the ranch’s past; his dealing with stray cows and their constant combat with a pack of wolves. And when he has to kill one, it haunts for months afterwards. He doesn’t leave the ranch because he couldn’t hack it, but because he heard it was going to be sold to developers and the things would change.I found this to be a very insightful memoir, but did he really grow and change? I’m not sure; I found it to be reminiscent. And the photos that included were breathtaking.
