In an eleventh floor corner office in downtown Cleveland during the spring of 1961, 30 yearold George Steinbrenner sketched with his hands the future as he dreamed it. He grabbed the young basketball player who was sitting near him by the shoulder with one hand and jabbed the air with invisible designs with the other. A glittering 12,000 seat basketball palace, Steinbrenner said to Larry Siegfried, the just graduated captain of the Ohio State basketball team, would soon spring from the weedy empty lots along the Lake Erie shoreline. It would be an arena fit for the basketball royalty Steinbrenner was assembling for the Cleveland Pipers of the new American Basketball League. Before the Pipers tumultuous story was over, Steinbrenner would win Siegfried s services and the ABL championship.
In George Steinbrenner's Pipe Dream, Bill Livingston brings to life the remarkable story of the one season wonder Pipers and their unlikely national championship. Drawing on personal interviews and extensive research, he introduces readers to the personalities that surrounded the organization, including John McLendon, the first African American head coach in any professional sport; Jerry Lucas, one of college basketball's greatest players; Dick Barnett, the best player on the team and the driving force for their ABL championship; the extravagantly talented prodigy Connie Hawkins; and Jack Adams, the Pipers captain, who was traded in mid-season in a fit of pique on Steinbrenner's part.
Bill Livingston takes readers along for the Pipers short but wild ride, providing a compelling and entertaining story about a fascinating chapter in sports history.

I was surprised that there were no pictures, especially with the author's connection to the Plain Dealer. Heard about the book when Tony Kornheiser plugged it on PTI. Nice addition to my basketball library. I wrote Season of the 76ers, so this book was right up my alley.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. the great John McLendon By John Mcevoy There have been few more colorful figures in American sports than the controversial Cleveland shipping heir George Steinbrenner. Late famous as the volatile, domineering owner of the New York Yankees, Steinbrenner broke in as owner of the champion Cleveland Pipers in the long gone American Basketball League. He left indelible impressions as fascinatingly recounted here by award-winning columnist Bill Livingston.Steinbrenner made history by employing, and later firing, the great John McLendon, first black basketball coach of a professional team. This genuine gentleman, much ignored today, is given his rightful due here. So is his imperious boss, infamous even today as an owner who withheld players' paychecks but even traded one of them at half-time to the opposing team! Of his quest to enter the National Basketball Association, Livingston writes that Steinbrenner "was heading there like a human calliope, pealing with empty promises, steam driven by his own hot air."The great shooting guard Dick ("Fall Back, Baby") Barnett said that Steinbrenner "didn't know much about basketball, but that didn't stop him...He assumed the position that he was always right."This is a thoroughly researched account of a mainly forgotten chapter in the history of American sports. It is full of interesting characters, memorable anecdotes, and the overwhelming presence of the man later known in New York City as King George when, in his developmental days in Cleveland, he was just a moneyed prince driven by self confidence and ambition
