Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are three of philosophy’s greatest contributors. You already knew that. But what you might not know is that they all lived in classical Athens at around the same time. You might not know that Socrates was executed for practicing free speech. You might not know that Plato was sold into slavery for making the Tyrant of Syracuse angry. And you might not know that Aristotle tutored the famous Alexander the Great. The philosophers were part of some crazy world events as well. The Peloponnesian War, the Macedonian takeover, the thirty tyrants who thought they could wipe out Athenian democracy…it’s all there. Truth to be told, there’s not a lot of testimony out there detailing what their lives were like. Historians of those days were more concerned with documenting the perpetual civil wars, and the philosophers’ students were more concerned with recording their teachers’ ideas. However, this book by Simon T. Bailey entitled Greek Philosophers: The Lives and Times of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle is a look into what it might have been like for Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle to live in Athens in the fourth and fifth centuries BCE. If you’re looking for a dry professorial work full of archaeological evidence, then this book isn’t going to be your cup of tea, but if you’re looking for a partially fictionalized rendition of the philosophers’ lives and thoughts that seeks to humanize those marble statues or are looking for something to wet your palate and get you excited about ancient Greek history and philosophy, then this book is your boon.

Not much has changed in the fundamentals of philosophy in 2400 years By Denniger Bolton I like the premise of this book that is not so much a rehash or requoting of the works of the Greek Philosophers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, but a fictionalized tale from what might have happened in the lives of the three philosophers. Very little actual historical data, cold hard facts about their personal lives exsist from the three so this book by Simon T Bailey, the autor takes a look at what might have been and at the same intersperses some actual facts with the dramatization, we readers may or may not actually have already heard. A more user-friendly approach, says Mr. Bailey. The story starts with the Trial of Socrates for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, the City of Athena. On to Plato, his student, who starts an academy in the city, and Aristotle, who starts his own school because his thoughts and beliefs were so opposed to Plato’s. I liked the book a lot and the section on the followers of these three, like Kant, John Locke and Descartes to name a few was interesting to me.

Greek philosophers are my weak spot and this book is like a source for all the best stories and parts of the philosopher's life. The author apparently has a lot of knowledge on this subject and the way it's all put together in one book is simply amazing.

I would recommend it to anyone interested in classical philosophy. Prior to reading this, I was not much for philosophical thought; however, this book really gives you an in-depth understanding of greek philosophers and their philosophical arguments. One thing I discovered was that most of the popular philosophers of this time period drew thoughts from their predecessors. So, for example, Plato drew inspiration from Socrates, and Aristotle expanded upon Plato's philosophies. This mirrors Einstein's philosophy which he drew from Immanuel Kant and others. This was a great book on the origins of Greek philosophy and the semantics of Greek philosophical terms.
