Two visionary writers from Edinburgh, Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby, have created a new depiction of the nation's most loved poet, based on the epic character of the famous narrative poem Tam o'Shanter. Tiernen Trevallion, one of the UK's most promising new comic artists, provides the artwork. The story asks what if the events of the narrative poem Tam o' Shanter, Burns' most famous work, were actually based on something that happened to Burns himself. Like his fictional creation, Robbie mistakenly takes the wrong road and ends up stumbling upon a full-blown witches' sabbath being held in the ruins of the haunted old Alloway Kirk. Like Tam, the hot-blooded young poet is entranced by the sight of the dancing witches, but is saved by the sudden and dramatic intervention of the pair of witch-hunters, the old veteran McKay and his young apprentice Meg. And so begins Burns' education in the ways of witch-hunting, as McKay and Meg struggle to keep him out of the clutches of the demonic Cutty Sark and out of trouble with witches, demons and local farm girls.

By HMS Warspite This Scottish graphic novel explores an exotic but exciting premise: what if Scotland's great poet, Robert Burns, had been a witchhunter? The story picks up Robbie Burns as an Ayrshire youth in 1779, saved from a potentially fatal encounter with a coven of witches by two witch hunters, the lovely red-haired Maggie and the tough old MacKay. It turns out that the young ploughman and would-be poet has a gift for the trade, and the trio will take on Old Scratch himself to save a few marked souls. The story borrows liberally from some more modern superhero stories, and the graphic artistry is quite good. The dialogue is in keeping with the times and the place, and may be a challenge for the casual reader. The backend of the book has a nice short biography of Burns and a sampling of his poetry. Well-recommended. The crude humor and violence may be a bit much for younger readers.

In this case, what if Robbie Burns, Scotland National poet, had actually experienced some of the events written about in his epic poem Tam 'O' Shanter? The story follows Burns as he encounters a coven, meets up with 2 witch hunters and is himself trained as a witch Hunter. The story rolls along, with clever use of Burns' poetry throughout. The art is fantastuc, very reminiscent of the art of Mike Mignola (Hellboy). It is well suited to the story. This could almost fit into the Hellboy universe, and this is meant as a great compliment. There is excellent use of scots dialect and the volume also contains a decent biography of Burns as well as several of his poems, particularly the ones quoted in the story. All in all a very impressive piece of work that I thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended.
